HP Spectre 13-w000 x360 Convertible PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Keyboard suddenly stopped working appropriately; right shift key and space bar would not operate. All sticky key settings were off. Problem "resolved" which space key and left shift were used together, allowing a space to be typed. Problem suddenly went away.

No apparently hardware problems or "gunk" or keys physically sticking.

Please help me figure this out to prevent it from happening again?

Welcome to the HP Forums, this is a great location to get assistance! I read your post and see that you are getting intermediate issue with the keyboard. I would like to help you resolve this issue.

However, I will need a few details to provide an accurate solution,

  • When did this issue start?
  • Did you any hardware or software changes?

Meanwhile

  • Clean the keyboard with compressed air (blow compressed air in the gaps between keys). This removes some lint and dust.

Perform Power Reset on your Laptop.

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.

  3. Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.

  4. Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

  5. Remove the battery from the battery compartment.

  6. With the battery and power cord unplugged, press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge from the capacitors.

  7. Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the laptop, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.

  8. Press the Power button to turn on the computer.

  9. If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter key.

  10. After Windows opens, reconnect each peripheral device that was disconnected, one device at a time, until all devices are reconnected.

  11. Your laptop has been reset. After a power reset, it is a good idea to run Windows Update and HP Support Assistant to update all device drivers. See Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update (Windows 10, 😎 and Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 10, 8, 7) for more information.

Let me know if the issue appears again.

Cheers.

The battery cannot be removed form my model notebook, so I'm not sure how to do a hard restart like you are suggesting.

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

I understand the issue better now.

To perform a power reset on a laptop with a sealed or non-removable battery, use the following steps:

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.

  3. Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.

  4. Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

  5. For most laptops, press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds to reset.

  6. Plug the AC adapter back into the laptop computer, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.
  7. Press the Power button to turn on the computer.

  8. If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter key.

  9. After Windows opens, reconnect each peripheral device that was disconnected, one device at a time, until all devices are reconnected.

  10. Your laptop has been reset.

Once done, try the steps mentioned in this HP article to fix the issue with the keyboard.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers.
