HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cc5xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Im having an issue with my pavilion laptop. I know its not made for games but i know with the nvidia geforce 940mx i should be able to play low to medium graphics games on low settings.  Even at games were it says it can run athigh graphics  im getting sudden frame drops. Even extreme low settings do not improve the situation.

The issue goes as follows: Start game>constant 60fps>suddenframedrop after about half a minute> its 2fps for about 30 seconds> game goes back to 60fps> cicle repeates

I have posted a thread a while ago which was replied by @MKazi. We thought the issue was fixed but that wasn't the case.

The things we have tried back then:

The post is linked here:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/sudden-fps-drop-in-games/m-p/6...

Things i've tried by now:

-the issue is the same when charging, however I believe de drops are less frequent

-the processor was on 100% a lot of the time so i force stopped some programs, but  the problem is still there

- power settings to max performance

-installed new drivers

-set the max processorfrequency from my i5 to maximum in advanced power settings

-The bios update from the other thread

-Some extra drivers have been installed (updated)

I have done some tests and there is one thing that seems to be the cause for these random lag spikes in games and heavy programs. I made a screenshot of one of these test showing a massive core frequency drop when de cpu is under load (as shown in the picture below).

The issue starts imediatly when under load and that means the temperature does not seem to be the main cause of the problem as the issue already happens at about 50 degrees celcius.

I fixed the issue

to fix it you need to:

1. right click on my pc and select manage

2. go to device manager

3. update all drivers for processors

4. update all graphic drivers

5. Switching the dedicated graphicscard off/ on seems to help as well

These steps have fixed my random fps drops in games etc...

I now have a reasonable stable fps

Hello,

The first thing you should do is check your computer specs vs. the minimum requirements of the games you are trying to play.

If yu do meet the minimum specs, perhaps it's the games that have not been well optimized. Can only blame the developers for that. (for example: I have a 10 year old laptop with integrated graphics that can run Mass Effct 3 at a smooth 30-40 fps but Half Life ONE can barely run)

You didn't give your exact model so I can't give advice regarding your specs, sorry.

Thanks for such a quick reply.

I actualy did note the model, its the pavillion-cc5xx.

Specs:

Processor= Intel Core i5-7200U

RAM= 8gb

GPU= nvidia geforce 940mx

I know wich games i should be able to run with these specs, and overal the games run at 60 fps. The problem is the sudden frame drops. The game goes from 60fps to 2 fps for about 30 seconds once every 3 minutes or so. The games i play are not necessarily badly optimised games.
