Hi @Jiminmke,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Notebook is having trouble updating Windows 10, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.
- Check Internet Connection: Make sure your computer is connected to the internet. Sometimes updates won't download or install if the connection is unstable.
- Restart Your Computer: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve update issues. Restart your computer and try updating again.
- Check for Updates Manually: Instead of relying on automatic updates, you can manually check for updates. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then click "Check for updates."
- Free Up Disk Space: Windows updates often require a significant amount of free disk space. Check if your computer has enough space available. You can use Disk Cleanup to delete unnecessary files and free up space.
- Disable Antivirus/Firewall: Sometimes security software can interfere with Windows updates. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus or firewall and see if the updates install successfully. Just remember to re-enable them afterward.
- Run Windows Update Troubleshooter: Windows has built-in troubleshooters that can help identify and fix update problems. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Update Drivers: Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause update issues. Make sure all your device drivers are up to date.
- Reset Windows Update Components: Sometimes the Windows Update components themselves can become corrupted, causing update failures. You can reset these components using Command Prompt. Search for "cmd" in the Start menu, right-click on Command Prompt, and select "Run as administrator." Then, type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each.
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
After running these commands, try updating Windows again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
