Hi @ginpig,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
There are several reasons why your HP computer might not stay in sleep mode. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue.
Check Power Settings
- Open Power Options:
- Right-click the Start button and select "Power Options."
- Click on "Additional power settings."
- Change Advanced Power Settings:
- Click on "Change plan settings" next to your current power plan.
- Click on "Change advanced power settings."
- Expand "Sleep" and then "Allow wake timers." Set both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to "Disable."
- Expand "USB settings" and then "USB selective suspend setting." Set both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to "Enabled."
Check for Device Wake-Up Settings
- Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button and select "Device Manager."
- Expand "Network adapters," right-click on your network adapter, and select "Properties."
- Go to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer."
- Repeat for other devices like your mouse and keyboard under the "Mice and other pointing devices" and "Keyboards" sections.
Disable Wake Timers
- Task Scheduler:
- Press Windows + R, type taskschd.msc, and press Enter.
- Look for any tasks that might wake the computer. Common culprits include "UpdateOrchestrator" and "Maintenance Configurator."
- Right-click these tasks, select "Properties," and go to the "Conditions" tab. Uncheck "Wake the computer to run this task."
Disable Fast Startup
- Control Panel:
- Open Control Panel and go to "Power Options."
- Click "Choose what the power buttons do."
- Click "Change settings that are currently unavailable."
- Uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" and click "Save changes."
Update BIOS and Drivers
- Visit the HP support website and ensure that your BIOS and all drivers, especially for the chipset and power management, are up to date.
Run Power Troubleshooter
- Settings:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Run the "Power" troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.

Check for Third-Party Software
- Ensure that any third-party software (e.g., antivirus programs, backup software) is not set to perform actions that could wake your computer from sleep.
Event Viewer
- Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + R, type eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.
- Go to Windows Logs > System.
- Look for entries that indicate the computer is waking up and see if a particular process or device is causing it.
Disable Wake on LAN
- If you have a network adapter that supports Wake on LAN, disable it in the BIOS/UEFI settings or in the device properties in Device Manager.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue preventing your HP computer from staying in sleep mode.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
