my computer wont turn on while on charger, the lights flash like it's on but the top is closed.

all of a sudden when you plug my laptop into the charger the lights that flash when it's still on and you close it comes on when I plug it in. but it wont turn on. even when I hit the power button. I've tired taken the battery out and just having it plugged in and nothing's working. my whole life is on this laptop so I dont want to lose what's on it. I just want it to turn on!! can someone please help me figure it out so I dont have to spend a lot of money on it.
