Files don't download into applications; instead, they download to the default folder on your internal drive -- most common is your Documents folder.
Every Windows file has a three character extension -- as in message.txt -- which is a "text" file. Windows assigns applications by default using these extensions. So, if the file is a picture image and has an extension of .jpg, when you click on that file, Windows will try to open that file using the default application assignment.
To see what applications CAN open a file, locate the file in the saved folder, right-click on the file, and you will see a list of applications that can be used to open the file. Try each one in turn until you find one that works.
Once you find that one, you can then choose the option to ALWAYS open those files with that application so the next time you click a file, it will open automatically with the right application.
