Hi @nanepag,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop only works when it's plugged in, there could be a few possible causes for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Check the battery: Make sure the battery is properly seated in its compartment. If it's removable, try taking it out and reinserting it securely. Clean the battery contacts and the laptop's battery terminals if necessary.
  • Power settings: Check the power settings on your laptop. It's possible that the power plan is set to "Plugged in" mode, which could cause the laptop to not utilize the battery power properly. Adjust the power plan settings to enable battery usage and see if it makes a difference.
  • Battery calibration: Perform a battery calibration. This involves fully charging the battery, then discharging it completely, and finally charging it again. This process helps calibrate the battery's power meter and can sometimes resolve issues related to battery detection.
  • Update drivers and BIOS: Ensure that you have the latest drivers and BIOS installed for your HP laptop. Outdated drivers or BIOS versions can sometimes cause power-related problems. Visit the HP support website, enter your laptop's model number, and download the latest drivers and BIOS updates if available.
  • Power management settings: Open the Device Manager on your laptop, expand the "Batteries" category, and right-click on "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery." Select "Uninstall device" and restart your laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver, which might help resolve any power management issues.
  • Faulty battery or charging circuitry: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there's a problem with the battery itself or the laptop's charging circuitry.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
