my laptops touchpad isn't working, i've plugged in my mouse and that ends up working but sitll not my tocuhpad. i had to turn off my touchpad because whenever i put it on it's always glitching and i cant even move it without having to click hard but now it just doesnt seem to work. i've asked my dad and google both for help and they told me to restart my laptop, clean my touchpad or update drivers. i did that yet the problem still wasn't solved. i need my laptop for school and im living off my touchscreen right now on my laptop because my cursor/touchpad isnt workign at all. it doesnt function properly

Hi @ok710,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your touchpad stops working, especially when you're relying on it for school. Since you've already tried restarting, cleaning, and updating drivers, let’s go deeper with a few troubleshooting steps:

Step-by-Step Fix for HP Laptop Touchpad Not Working

1. Check if the Touchpad is Disabled

  • Press Fn + F6Fn + F9, or Fn + F5 (varies by model) to toggle the touchpad.
  • Some HP laptops have a small dot in the top-left corner of the touchpad; double-tap it to enable/disable.

2. Enable Touchpad in Settings

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Touchpad.
  • Make sure the Touchpad toggle is ON.
  • If the option is missing, the driver may be corrupted or uninstalled.

3. Reinstall Touchpad Driver

  • Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
  • Expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Look for a SynapticsELAN, or HID-compliant touchpad.
    • If found, right-click > Uninstall device.
    • Restart your laptop Windows should reinstall it automatically.

4. Download the Correct Driver from HP

If you're unsure of your model, press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and look for System Model.

5. Check BIOS Settings

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  • Look for the Internal Pointing Device or Touchpad and make sure it’s enabled.
  • Save and exit BIOS.

6. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press Esc, then F2 to open HP Diagnostics.

Run the Component Test > Input Devices > Touchpad Test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
