Hello @Dooleygone,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

A specific OS was not specified so for a factory reset on Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Navigate to Update & Security
  3. Select Recovery
  4. Select Get Started under Reset this PC
  5. Select Remove everything
  6. Select Cloud or Local - it doesn't matter
  7. Select Change settings on the next page
  8. Enable Clean data? and disable Download Windows?
  9. Proceed with the reset

This should be sufficient but if you want to be extra safe and you're simply discarding the laptop, not donating or gifting, you can consult a local hardware store or just open up the laptop and physically destroy the hard drive.
