At HP's  suggestion, I made a password reset disk. However, now that I have it, I do not know how to use it if the need arises.

When I open the file with Notebook, it is unreadable. Does someone know how this file is used to open up my computer when I forget the password?

Hello @norman16

Check these articles to learn how to use the password reset disk

Best option is not to not forget your Windows password 🙂 and keep it in a safe place.

Extra tip:

I and many people around the world use a single container for store all password in a safe encrypted variant. KeePass is free and oper source software - once password for all your accounts. KeePass Classic edition (v1) is recommended. You may want to give it a try. Keep a copy of this software and container so that you never forget this password which stores all other password or important files or info. >> http://keepass.info/download.html
