HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer

My print quality is terrible. Only about half printed. Tec at Staples said to clean the ink jets. I can't figure how to do that. The buttons she said to push aren't available, as far as I can see. I'm totally ignorant with this kind of stuff.

Hi @dummy24,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Improving the print quality of your HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer is a straightforward process involving cleaning the ink nozzles and cartridges. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you clean the ink jets:

Automatic Printhead Cleaning

Power On Your Printer

  • Ensure that your printer is turned on and connected to your computer or network.

Access Printer Maintenance Tools

  • On your printer's control panel, press the Home button.
  • Navigate to the Setup icon (wrench or toolbox), and press OK.

Select Tools

  • Use the arrow keys to find and select Tools or Printer Maintenance.
  • Press OK.

Clean Printhead

  • Select Clean Printhead or Clean Ink Cartridges.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to start the cleaning process.
  • The printer will initiate a cleaning cycle to help unblock the ink nozzles.

Manual Cleaning if Automatic Cleaning Does Not Improve Quality

Check Ink Levels

  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are not empty. Replace any low or empty cartridges.
  • Check the ink levels through your printer’s control panel or HP Smart app.

Remove and Clean Cartridges

  • Open the printer’s cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center.
  • Remove the cartridges gently.
  • Use a lint-free cloth moistened with distilled or purified water to gently wipe the copper-colored contacts and ink nozzles.
  • Reinsert the cartridges securely into the carriage.

Align the Printhead

  • After cleaning, it might be necessary to align the printhead to improve the print quality.
  • Access Tools in the printer menu.
  • Select Align Printhead.
  • Follow the instructions to print an alignment page.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. Want to tell you, though, I am 90 years old and totally ignorant when it comes to this electronic stuff.

When I open my printer, I see only 3 items, scan, copy and printables. I had no idea I had to swipe that sideways and there were more choices. I finally did that and then was able to find my way. I did the cleaning of ink jets and that did nothing so

I took a chance and bought a new cartridge. That solved the problem. Did the alignment and all is fine. Wouldn't have been able to do it without your input. Please remember, though, that you may have an older person you are helping and you have to be very elemental in the directions. I know.....I'm one of them. and I have no eight year old neighbor kids that can hejp!

Thanks.
