This is most definitely a software issue. When the laptop is unplugged, it appears to adjust normally with "quietest" actually being the quietest setting. When on AC power "quiet" is the quietest setting. The slider is reversed.
As I noted elsewhere here, it may have something to do with the laptop power profile. I have seen the battery move from a lower setting toward performance when the laptop is "unplugged" from power rather than moving toward the battery conservation setting. You have to manually move it.
I am quite happy with the laptop as a whole, but these software issues should be easy to diagnose and change with a software update. Please HP, get your act together.

Hello guys, I had a long chat with HP Support (Italy), but it led to nowhere: they finally proposed me to send the laptop for a repair (which is obviously not a solution, given a software bug). I had to send some reports of my system and videos multiple time and to different support guys, but it is clear that they did not understand (or maybe they can't/don't want to help me) that my aim was simply to report a bug.
Therefore, I really don't know how to proceed, my last hope is this forum and the Reddit one.
