I've been using my Pavilion dv7 notebook for about 4 1/2 years. Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit. I keep my notebook well maintained, always install the latest Windows updates, use the HP Support Assistant on occasion, etc.
Today, for the first time EVER, a message has popped up from HP Support Assistant, telling me "Your computer needs to restart." There is no "postpone" button with an option to specify a time to remind me again... just "Restart later" or "Restart now." There is also NO REASON GIVEN AT ALL about WHY I need to restart. In ALL maintenance or installation processes I've ever gone through, I've always been informed about why I need to restart. I was doing normal things on my computer when this popped up -- reading through emails, looking at various tabs in my browser. NOTHING I was doing should have caused this to happen.
I've read through some old forum posts about this, with people saying it keeps popping up even after they reboot several times. That's ridiculous. I'm not going to go through that. WHY has this suddenly occurred? WHAT can I do to prevent this notice from popping up, and will I continue to get the Windows updates notifications if I disable this in some way?
Thank you.

First download, install latest HP support assistant software from here:
http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_uk/en/any/psg/pl...
Now open it, disable ALL automatic updates, disable or click No to all the options listed here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467905#AbT1
If you need, you can manually install individual drivers through HP SA
Do not allow it to automatically update anything
It'll not hinder with Windows updates.

Okay, when I go to install it, I get a message: "A newer version of HP Support Assistant is installed. Setup will now close."
I clicked "OK" and decided I'd try to do what you suggest above in my existing version of HPSA. But now, every time I try to open HPSA, ALL I get is the popup telling me to restart!
How do I get out of this Catch-22?

What a mess!
I uninstalled HPSA, using Revo Uninstaller Pro 3.1.9. I ran the installer file sp78153.exe. After removing ALL traces of HPSA using Revo, I STILL got the message that a newer version was installed when I ran the new installer.
Now...... HPSA is on my Start menu, it's in my list of Programs AND when I click on it, NOTHING HAPPENS. The program is fried and will not open. No matter how I try to open it, it will not open.
In all my years of running this computer, I have never had one bit of trouble with HPSA!
Oh, and there is no longer a large blue question mark in my System Tray.

Also, there is no longer an "HP Support Assistant" listed in my programs when I go to the Control Panel to uninstall programs (the built-in uninstaller, not the Revo Pro software). And when I right click on HPSA in my Start menu, there is no Uninstall option.
