Hi @ghostseitsemas,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

If you want to verify whether your HP Pavilion laptop is new, refurbished, or used, here are some steps you can take:

1. Check the Laptop's Warranty Status

  • Go to the HP Warranty Check website.
  • Enter your laptop's serial number and product number (both are usually found on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop or inside the battery compartment).
  • Verify the start date of the warranty. For a new device, the warranty usually begins close to the purchase date. If the warranty has already started long before your purchase, the device might be refurbished or pre-owned.

2. Inspect the Device's Build and Packaging

  • New laptops typically come in sealed retail boxes with pristine packaging.
  • If the box looks different or is labeled generically (e.g., "HP 16-inch laptop") rather than specifically for your Pavilion model, it might indicate a refurbished or open-box item.
  • Check for signs of wear, scratches, or fingerprints on the laptop itself.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Press Esc repeatedly when starting the laptop, then select System Diagnostics (or F2 > Diagnostics).
  • Run a complete system test to ensure all hardware components are in good condition. Refurbished devices may have replaced or repaired components.

4. Check the System's Usage History

  • Event Viewer (Windows):
    • Open the Start menu, type Event Viewer, and open it.
    • Navigate to Windows Logs > System and check the earliest events. If there are logs predating your purchase, it may not be new.
  • System Information:
    • Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter.
    • Look for the "Installed Date" under System Summary or check for the BIOS installation date.

5. Review the Windows Activation Information

  • Go to Settings > System > Activation and check if Windows is activated. A new device should have Windows activated automatically with a digital license. If it isn’t, this could be a red flag.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
