Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After a recent Windows update I was not able to open Microsoft Office Pro 2013 which I purcahsed with my HP Envy laptop.  As soon as I tried to open Word 2013 I got the following error message. "We could not start your program. Please try starting it again. If it won't start, try repairing Office from 'Programs and Features' in the Control Panel. I found directions online to do that but if I do that will it restore my Office 2013 or will I lose my license on it. Please help.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

Once Microsoft has registered your Office software during its first use, Microsoft keeps track of that registration.

It is better, faster, and much easier if you have your license key to Activate Office, of course.

HP rarely keeps track of this information "after the fact".

If Microsoft Office, a fully functional version of the software, was provided with the purchase of the computer,

If you purchased the computer from HP,

Look for your license key information in your email communications sent to you from HP at the time of the purchase.

For example, the key might be included with the original order confirmation or with a later "shipping" confirmation email.

What else?

Check with Microsoft Support.

Installation and License Key Options

Some of the ways to “get” Office Software:

  1. Trial Software that comes with the computer.

An "offer" to try the software, in other words.  The license is NOT included in Trial offers.

  1. Purchase Microsoft Office when you purchase your computer

Look for your license key with your purchase paperwork.

  1. Receive a “free one year subscription to Office 365 when you purchase the computer (quite rare).

If you have trouble with this exact type of “installed” Office before it has expired,

Contact HP Support for recovery options.

  1. Purchase Office separately from Microsoft or other merchant.
