Hi @anon12345676767
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I understand that your HP EliteBook 840 G5 screen is flickering approximately every 5 seconds. I'll be glad to help you with this.
To assist you better, could you kindly confirm the following:
- Is the flickering happening only after Windows starts, or does it also occur in the BIOS screen?
- Does the screen flicker when connected to an external monitor?
- Are you seeing any lines, distortion, or changes in brightness along with the flickering?
In the meantime, kindly try these steps and confirm :
Step 1: Check if Task Manager Flickers
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Observe whether Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen.
- If Task Manager does not flicker, the issue may be related to a display driver or application.
- If Task Manager does flicker, the issue could be related to the display driver or hardware.
Step 2: Update Graphics Drivers
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel Graphics device and select Update driver.
- Restart the system after the update.
You can also install the latest drivers from HP Support: https://support.hp.com/drivers
Step 3: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics - click here for steps
- Power off the notebook.
- Turn it on and repeatedly tap F2.
- Select Component Tests > Display.
- Run the available display tests and note any failure IDs.
Step 4: Test in BIOS
- Restart the notebook.
- Tap F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
- Leave the system on the BIOS screen for a few minutes.
If the flickering occurs in BIOS, it may indicate a hardware-related issue such as the display panel, display cable, or system board.
I hope this helps.
I'm an HP Employee.

Open task manager by pressing ctrl + shift + esc buttons and check what happens when the screen flickers. If task manager flickers along with the rest of the screen, reinstalling or updating the display driver.
If the problem started after a recent windows or driver update, try using roll back driver from device manager to return to the previous driver version.
If you want to check for driver updates automatically, you can use a driver updater tool developed by the systweak team to scan your PC for outdated drivers and find available updates. It’s still a good idea to review the driver details before installing any update.
If task manager does not flicker while the rest of the screen does, the issue is more likely related to a specific app or software running in the background. Try closing recently installed or updat applications.
