HP Notebook - 17-x137cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Some number keys and arrow keys do not work.  I have already tried restarting, updating and reinstalling drivers and loading default settings through BIOS.  I cannot locate the correct updated driver file from the HP website and was wondering if anyone could help me.

Hi @GSchott,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's frustrating when certain keys on your laptop's keyboard stop working. Since you've already tried some troubleshooting steps, let's explore some additional solutions you can try.

  • External Keyboard Test: First, connect an external USB keyboard to your HP Notebook. Test the problematic keys and arrow keys with the external keyboard. If they work fine with the external keyboard, it's likely a hardware issue with your laptop's built-in keyboard.
  • Clean the Keyboard: Dust, debris, or spilled liquids can cause keyboard keys to malfunction. Turn off your laptop, unplug it, and try cleaning the keyboard carefully. You can use compressed air to blow away any dust or debris. If you've spilled any liquids, follow proper cleaning procedures to ensure there's no residue left.
  • Hardware Check: If cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, there could be a hardware problem with the keyboard.
  • Keyboard Replacement: If it's a hardware issue and the keyboard is damaged beyond repair, you might need to replace it. You can find replacement keyboards for your specific HP Notebook model online.
  • BIOS Update: Although you've already reset the BIOS settings, it's worth checking if there's a BIOS update available for your HP Notebook on the HP website. Sometimes, firmware updates can address keyboard-related issues.
  • Operating System Check: Ensure your operating system is up-to-date. Sometimes, OS updates can resolve compatibility issues with hardware components.
  • Driver Check: Even if you've updated drivers, double-check that you have the latest drivers installed for your keyboard and chipset. Sometimes, Windows Update doesn't install the most up-to-date drivers.
  • System Restore: If the issue started recently, you can try performing a system restore to a point in time when the keyboard was working correctly.
  • External USB Keypad: As a temporary workaround, you can use an external USB numeric keypad for the missing number keys. This won't help with the arrow keys, but it can be a quick fix for numeric input.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
