Got a replacement mobo for my customer and I have not had to tattoo a mobo in about 11 years so we no longer have useful tools and my Internet search has not provided anything that looks viable.
What is the tattooing process for this laptop motherboard? Please
Thank you

HI @aciOEM,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Tattooing a motherboard, which involves writing system-specific information (such as the product name, serial number, SKU, and other DMI data) to the system board, is a crucial step when replacing a motherboard, particularly for HP systems. Here's how you can proceed with this process:
Tools Required:
- USB Drive: To create a bootable USB drive with the necessary tools.
- HP DMI Tool: This utility is specific to HP systems and is required to tattoo the motherboard.
Steps to Tattoo an HP Motherboard:
Download the HP DMI Tool:
- You might need to contact HP support or an authorized HP service provider to get the latest version of the DMI Tool as it’s not typically available for public download.
Create a Bootable USB Drive:
- Use a tool like Rufus to create a bootable USB drive. You can download Rufus from here.
Copy the DMI Tool to the USB Drive:
- Once you have the DMI tool, copy it to the bootable USB drive.
Enter BIOS Setup:
- Power on the laptop and press the appropriate key (usually F10, Esc, or F2) to enter the BIOS setup.
Disable Secure Boot and Enable Legacy Support:
- In the BIOS setup, navigate to the security settings to disable Secure Boot.
- Enable Legacy Support or CSM (Compatibility Support Module).
Boot from the USB Drive:
- Save the BIOS settings and reboot the laptop.
- Press the appropriate key (usually F9 or Esc) to bring up the boot menu and select the USB drive to boot from.
Run the DMI Tool:
- Follow the on-screen instructions to use the DMI tool.
- You will need to enter the system-specific information like the product name, serial number, SKU, etc. This information is usually found on a sticker on the laptop or in the documentation provided with the laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
