Hi @shaan09898

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels when the touchscreen driver disappears after being disabled and uninstalled, and you’re left without the “HID‑compliant touch screen” option in Device Manager.

You’ve already tried relying on Windows Update, so let’s go through the right way to restore it.

Why the driver is missing

The HID‑compliant touch screen driver is part of Windows itself, not a separate download in the HP drivers library. When it’s uninstalled, Windows should normally reinstall it automatically after a restart or update. If that doesn’t happen, it means the system isn’t detecting the touchscreen hardware correctly.

Steps to restore the touchscreen driver

1. Scan for hardware changes

  • Press Windows + X > Device Manager.
  • Click View > Show hidden devices.
  • Expand Human Interface Devices.
  • If HID‑compliant touch screen is missing, right‑click anywhere in the list and select Scan for hardware changes.
  • This forces Windows to re‑detect the touchscreen.

2. Run Windows Update manually

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update.
  • Click Check for updates.
  • Install all available updates, including optional driver updates.
  • Restart the PC and check Device Manager again.

3. Use HP Support Assistant

  • Download and install HP Support Assistant from here:
HP PCs – Using HP Support Assistant
  • Run the tool and check for driver updates.
  • If the touchscreen hardware is detected, the driver will be restored.

4. Perform hardware diagnostics

  • Restart the PC and press F2 repeatedly to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Component Test > Touchscreen Test.
  • If the test runs, the hardware is intact and the driver can be restored.
  • If the test does not detect the touchscreen, it indicates a hardware recognition issue.

5. Re‑add the driver manually (if detected)

  • In Device Manager, right‑click Human Interface Devices > Add legacy hardware.
  • Follow the wizard and select Install the hardware that I manually select.
  • Choose Human Interface Devices > HID‑compliant touch screen.
  • This reinstalls the generic Windows driver.

The HID‑compliant touchscreen driver is built into Windows, not downloaded separately. By scanning for hardware changes, running Windows Update, using HP Support Assistant, and testing with HP Hardware Diagnostics, you can restore the driver. If the hardware is detected, the driver will reappear automatically.

You are welcome @shaan09898

I can see how much effort you’ve already put in, and it’s discouraging when none of the usual recovery paths bring the touchscreen back. Thank you for carefully trying each method and even attempting a reset.

Let’s go a little deeper with some additional checks that can help confirm whether the touchscreen hardware is still being detected by the system:

1. Verify hardware detection in BIOS/UEFI

  • Restart the PC and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS/UEFI.
  • Navigate to System Information or Advanced.
  • Check if the touchscreen is listed under input devices.
  • If it does not appear here, Windows will not be able to load the driver.

2. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI version)

  • Power off the PC.
  • Press the Power button and immediately tap Esc repeatedly.
  • From the Startup Menu, select F2 – System Diagnostics.
  • Look for Component Tests > Touchscreen.
  • If the test is missing, it usually means the hardware is not being detected.

3. Check Device Manager for hidden devices

  • Press Windows + X > Device Manager.
  • Click View > Show hidden devices.
  • Expand Human Interface Devices.
  • If HID‑compliant touchscreen does not appear even as a hidden device, the system is not seeing the hardware.

4. Try Windows 11 upgrade only if hardware is detected

  • The HID‑compliant touchscreen driver is built into both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • Installing Windows 11 will not restore the driver if the hardware itself is not being recognized.
  • If diagnostics confirm the touchscreen is detected, then upgrading to Windows 11 could refresh the driver stack and bring it back.

5. Confirm with HP App

  • Install the HP App from HP Support.
  • Use Diagnose & Fix to check for missing drivers or hardware conflicts.
  • If the touchscreen hardware is detected, the app will attempt to restore the driver.

If the touchscreen does not appear in BIOS or diagnostics, unfortunately the issue points to hardware recognition rather than software. In that case, reinstalling Windows or upgrading to Windows 11 will not resolve it. If it does appear, then refreshing the OS or using the HP App should restore the HID driver.
