I just started using my hp laptop and was adjusting all my settings to what my previous laptop had, but when I went to change what the power button does, the option to set it to turn off the screen is not there. The only possible way to fix it that I found was https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/no-turn-off-display-option-when-choosing-what-...  , but my laptop doesn't have that registry. Does anyone know any other ways to fix this?

Hi @dsmurl974

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

Step 1: Check Power Options in Windows 11 Settings

First, let's ensure that you're checking the right settings in Windows 11.

Open Power & Sleep Settings:

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • In the Settings window, go to System > Power & battery.
  • Scroll down and click Screen and sleep to check the available options for when to turn off the screen.

Access Power Options for the Power Button:

  • Scroll down and click on Additional power settings (located under Related Settings).
  • This will open the Control Panel window for Power Options.
  • On the left side, click Choose what the power buttons do.

Check for Available Settings:

  • Under Power button settings, make sure you see the option to change what happens when you press the power button.
  • However, the "Turn off the display" option may not be directly available here.
  • If you don’t see it, then this option may be limited by the device’s power management drivers.

Step 2: Adjusting Advanced Power Settings

Open Advanced Power Settings:

  • In the Power Options window, next to your selected power plan (for example, Balanced), click Change plan settings.
  • Then, click Change advanced power settings.

Look for Display Settings:

  • In the Advanced settings window, find and expand the Display section.
  • Check if there are any settings for Turn off display after or Display brightness that can be adjusted to control how the display behaves when idle.

Step 3: Check Device Manager for Display Drivers

Sometimes, missing or outdated display drivers can affect power options. Make sure your display driver is up to date.

  1. Open Device Manager:
    • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    • Look for Display adapters and right-click on your display driver (likely AMD, as your laptop uses an AMD processor).
    • Choose Update driver and follow the on-screen instructions to check for driver updates.
  2. Update Power Management Drivers:
    • Similarly, you can check for power management drivers in Device Manager (under Batteries or System Devices) and ensure that they are up to date.
  3. Reboot the System after updating drivers.

Step 4: Use Third-Party Software for Display Management

If the built-in settings don’t provide the option you want, you can consider using third-party software to manage your display and power settings.

Some options include:

  • Display Power Management (DPM) software that allows you to configure custom behavior for the power button, screen timeout, and more.
  • NirCmd: A lightweight command-line utility that can turn off the display with a keyboard shortcut. You could potentially set it up so that pressing a button or shortcut turns off the display.
