I just started using my hp laptop and was adjusting all my settings to what my previous laptop had, but when I went to change what the power button does, the option to set it to turn off the screen is not there. The only possible way to fix it that I found was https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/no-turn-off-display-option-when-choosing-what-... , but my laptop doesn't have that registry. Does anyone know any other ways to fix this?

Hi @dsmurl974
Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
Step 1: Check Power Options in Windows 11 Settings
First, let's ensure that you're checking the right settings in Windows 11.
Open Power & Sleep Settings:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- In the Settings window, go to System > Power & battery.
- Scroll down and click Screen and sleep to check the available options for when to turn off the screen.
Access Power Options for the Power Button:
- Scroll down and click on Additional power settings (located under Related Settings).
- This will open the Control Panel window for Power Options.
- On the left side, click Choose what the power buttons do.
Check for Available Settings:
- Under Power button settings, make sure you see the option to change what happens when you press the power button.
- However, the "Turn off the display" option may not be directly available here.
- If you don’t see it, then this option may be limited by the device’s power management drivers.
Step 2: Adjusting Advanced Power Settings
Open Advanced Power Settings:
- In the Power Options window, next to your selected power plan (for example, Balanced), click Change plan settings.
- Then, click Change advanced power settings.
Look for Display Settings:
- In the Advanced settings window, find and expand the Display section.
- Check if there are any settings for Turn off display after or Display brightness that can be adjusted to control how the display behaves when idle.
Step 3: Check Device Manager for Display Drivers
Sometimes, missing or outdated display drivers can affect power options. Make sure your display driver is up to date.
- Open Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Look for Display adapters and right-click on your display driver (likely AMD, as your laptop uses an AMD processor).
- Choose Update driver and follow the on-screen instructions to check for driver updates.
- Update Power Management Drivers:
- Similarly, you can check for power management drivers in Device Manager (under Batteries or System Devices) and ensure that they are up to date.
- Reboot the System after updating drivers.
Step 4: Use Third-Party Software for Display Management
If the built-in settings don’t provide the option you want, you can consider using third-party software to manage your display and power settings.
Some options include:
- Display Power Management (DPM) software that allows you to configure custom behavior for the power button, screen timeout, and more.
- NirCmd: A lightweight command-line utility that can turn off the display with a keyboard shortcut. You could potentially set it up so that pressing a button or shortcut turns off the display.
