Hello,
(I am not a native english speaker)
I found my old HP laptop and I want to use it to watch videos but I cant connect anything to it via HDMI or VGA because of the graphic driver.
I tried Updating bios (now F.21)
I installed some drivers also the ones Windows 10 downloaded but it is not working.
I tried AMD stuff too but it never seems to work its doing something and then it just stops and closes the window while loading.
I feel like I tried every Youtube tutorial andI am just lost right now.
The laptop ist working just fine but i can not install the graphics driver.
I am thankful for any kind of help!
Ciao

Hi @5ch13304fm,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you’re encountering trouble installing the correct graphics drivers for your HP Pavilion dv6-6077sg after upgrading to Windows 10, which is understandable since this model was originally designed for Windows 7 and older hardware may face compatibility issues with newer operating systems.
Here’s how you can try resolving the issue:
1. Uninstall Current Graphics Drivers Software and Drivers for HP Pavilion dv6-6077sg Entertainment Notebook PC
- Open Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Display adapters section.
- Right-click the current graphics driver (likely Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or a faulty AMD driver) and select Uninstall.
- Check the box that says “Delete the driver software for this device.”
- Restart the laptop.
2. Use AMD Cleanup Utility
- Download and run the AMD Cleanup Utility to ensure all previously installed AMD software is completely removed.
- Restart the laptop again.
3. Download and Install Compatible AMD Driver
- Go to the official HP support page for your model:
HP Pavilion dv6-6077sg Drivers Page - Since this laptop originally came with an AMD Radeon HD 6490M graphics card, you’ll need an older driver that is compatible with Windows 10:
- Download Windows 7 or 8 Drivers: Look for the graphics driver under Windows 7 or Windows 8 (e.g., AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver).
- Run the installer in compatibility mode:
- Right-click on the downloaded driver file, choose Properties, and go to the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows 7 from the dropdown menu.
- Apply the changes and run the installer.
4. Try AMD Legacy Drivers
If the HP drivers don’t work, try AMD’s legacy drivers:
- Go to the AMD Drivers and Support page.
- Under Search for your product, input your laptop’s graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6490M).
- Download the latest Windows 10 legacy driver available for older models, if any, or the Windows 8 version.
- Install the driver and restart.
5. Check Windows Update for Drivers
- Sometimes, Windows Update provides functional drivers for legacy hardware:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for Updates and see if Windows installs a more compatible driver automatically.
6. Use Basic Display Adapter
- If none of the above solutions work, you can fall back to using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, which should at least give you basic functionality (including HDMI output).
- Go to Device Manager > Display adapters, and if it shows the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, you can attempt to connect the HDMI cable and see if it works. It may not support advanced features but should allow video output.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
