The processor is an integral part of the motherboard and cannot be easily upgraded.
The only way to upgrade the processor would be to replace the motherboard with one that is listed in chapter 3 of the service manual that may come with a better processor.

The cost of doing an upgrade like that would be excessive.

thanks, Paul- you likely saved me a real headache! is there any way to overclock this? there is not CPU settings on this bios. also, the CPU runs between 2.9-4 MHz. the system benchmarks around the 8th percentile, but I think it should be doing a lot better. The machine is from 2015 and we upgraded the RAM to 16 gig and eventually installed a new solid state 1T drive. I have ordered a new battery and 2 16g RAM sticks. Will that make any real difference?

As I suspected... 32gig is all this system can handle. can't hurt to try. I sure appreciate your help, Paul. I am swapping out the original battery. For some reason for a bit it stopped charging until I rebooted. Also, despite my "never" settings in energy usages, a minute or 2 after I stop typing the screen blanks until I touch a key or mouse button. My theory is that the battery's flow is not 100% consistent even when completely charged. Is it possible that when the current dips for just a brief moment the system reacts as if must go into the low battery mode? After 9 years a new battery is worthwhile.
P.S.: as you can probably tell, I am into fixing and using rather than replacing. sort of sentimental that way. <:

No need to apologize for asking questions.
Unfortunately, there are no BIOS updates that will allow you to access the advanced settings.
A while back there was some other forum member that apparently had a program to access advanced BIOS settings and while he was able to do access them and even change the values, he could not save the changes.
No doubt HP locks down the BIOS' to prevent users from frying the motherboards during the warranty period and submitting a warranty claim for service and parts.
