use function keys in Word on the laptop

how can I use function keys in Ms Word and Excel.

The function keys on this hp laptop are under the shift ... So if I want to use f8 in Word what should I do. Shift F8 has a different function.

There should be a key with "Fn" on it -- you press this, not the shift key -- to invoke the function keys.

You're right, I meant the fn button.
But I can't use that in Word, for example.
For example when I use fn f3 the screen becomes less bright instead of the text changing to capital letters ...
