After i did a PC reset, i keep on having a warning message : unsuccessful application installation for HP display control service. After spending so much time to troubleshot the cause of the problem, it seems that the HP application enabling service driver is the culprit. The driver (1.85.4388.0) was installed during the PC reset. I would like to know what is the implication if I uninstall the driver ? Or anyone know how to fix the problem to get rid of the warning message. The error always occurs when I reboot the system or turn on the screen from a hibernate/sleep state. The event viewer log show these error detail  :

Product: HP Display Control Service -- Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action RemoveLegacyArm, entry: UninstallLegacyService, library: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI6159.tmp

Ending a Windows Installer transaction: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpcustomcapcomp.inf_arm64_8c5cd7de8ebe05fb\ARM64\HPDCSetup.msi. Client Process Id: 17956.

I find out that the hpcustomcapcomp.inf come from the 1.85.4388.0 driver.

If for some reason it does not roll back to version 1.83.4311.0, you can download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog site at the link below--8th file down on the page.

I have uninstalled the HP driver 1.85.4388.0 and Windows automatically roll back the driver to the Microsoft driver version 10.0.26100.1 and then the error messages stop appearing. However, Windows still try to install that driver via Windows update again on the following day and i have to use a tool to hide/block the package so that it won't be re-installed again. My take is this is just to get around the problem and not fixing the actual cause ! What is the purpose of the driver package 1.85.4388.0 ? I can't find any details of that driver and am I supposed to hide/block it forever ? It seems to me that if that driver is installed it will trigger the Windows installer to install the HP display control service update and according to the event log there is some dll problem that cause the installation to fail and the error message will then be shown in the log. So HP should look into that dll error to get the problem fixed. Can the HP expert/support team care to comment ?

Hi @Joyce2018

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern and don’t worry let me help you with this.

In this case, it sounds like the driver version 1.85.4388.0 is linked to the HP Display Control Service, and the installation failure you’re seeing in the event logs may be due to a corrupted DLL or a compatibility issue with your current Windows build.

To help us better understand and resolve this, could you share:

  • The version of Windows you’re running (including build number).
  • The specific error message or DLL name mentioned in the event log.

In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Clean reinstall of HP drivers
    • Uninstall the HP Application Enabling Service driver completely.
    • Restart your PC.
    • Download the latest version directly from HP’s official support page https://support.hp.com/  for your model instead of Windows Update.
  2. Check HP Support Assistant
    • Run HP Support Assistant to see if it offers a newer or more stable version of the driver.
  3. Windows Update Troubleshooter
    • Run the built-in troubleshooter for Windows Update to clear any cached installation files that may be causing repeated reinstalls.
  4. Event Viewer details
  • Note the DLL error path and name and kindly share the error message. Sometimes, manually deleting leftover files from previous installations can prevent the installer from failing.

I hope this helps.

Hi Deep_World,

My laptop is running Windows 11 Home Version 25H2 ARM64 based (OS Build 26200.8037). The original driver version installed for HP application enabling services is 1.83.4311.0. I have done a Windows reset using the Windows cloud version in February due to the corruption of some system files. During the reset, Windows installed the driver 1.85.4388.0 for me and since then I start to see HP display control updates failed messages. I have downloaded both drivers from the Windows update catalog and compare the Inf. files and found out that in the Inf file for 1.85.4388.0, there is this instruction HPDCSetup.msi = 1 which is not found in the earlier version. I believed that instruction trigger the windows installer to install the HP display control services whenever the screen is turned on/reboot. I reproduced here all messages logged in the event viewer when windows tried to apply the update :

1. Beginning a Windows Installer transaction: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpcustomcapcomp.inf_arm64_8c5cd7de8ebe05fb\ARM64\HPDCSetup.msi. Client Process Id: 16360.

2. Product: HP Display Control Service -- The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2753. The arguments are: Arm64DisplayControl, ,

3. Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: HP Display Control Service. Product Version: 5.3.72.0. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Portrait Displays, Inc.. Installation success or error status: 1603.

4. Ending a Windows Installer transaction: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpcustomcapcomp.inf_arm64_8c5cd7de8ebe05fb\ARM64\HPDCSetup.msi. Client Process Id: 16360.

5. Beginning a Windows Installer transaction: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpcustomcapcomp.inf_arm64_8c5cd7de8ebe05fb\ARM64\HPDCSetup.msi. Client Process Id: 10852.

6. Product: HP Display Control Service -- Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action RemoveLegacyArm, entry: UninstallLegacyService, library: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI588D.tmp

7. Product: HP Display Control Service -- Installation failed.

8. Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: HP Display Control Service. Product Version: 5.3.72.0. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Portrait Displays, Inc.. Installation success or error status: 1603.

9. Ending a Windows Installer transaction: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpcustomcapcomp.inf_arm64_8c5cd7de8ebe05fb\ARM64\HPDCSetup.msi. Client Process Id: 10852.

I believe item 1 to 4 are for the 1st attempt and item 5 to 9 are for the immediate 2nd attempt.

After I uninstall the driver 1.85.4388.0 to stop the error messages, Windows roll back the driver to a windows generic version 10.0.26100.1. I tried to update the driver to 1.83.4311.0 and was told "windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed. there may be better drivers on windows update or on the device manufacturer's website"

I have gone to the HP support website to check for any new software/drivers and every time I was told my system is up to date. Today I just have another check and was told again i don't need any new software/drivers. Obviously this can't be the case as the latest driver for HP software enabling service should be 1.85.4388.0 or may be there is another newer version !!

My question is what is the purpose of the driver 1.85.4388.0 ? Is it trying to address/fix some problem or provide some enhanced features ? Why there is a need to trigger the HP display control services update whenever there is a reboot/wake up  of the PC (ie turn on the screen) ? Do I really need to install the HP display control services update ?

Hi @Joyce2018,

Thanks for your response.

The HP Application Enabling Service driver version 1.85.4388.0 is designed to integrate HP Display Control Service into Windows, enabling advanced display calibration and color management features.

  • Primary Role: It enables HP Display Control Service, developed by Portrait Displays, Inc., to manage brightness, color profiles, and display calibration beyond Windows’ native controls.

 Do You Need This Driver?

  • Not essential for basic use: If you don’t rely on advanced display calibration, your system will function fine without it.

 Suggested Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Clean Uninstall Residuals
    • Use a tool like Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter to remove leftover HP Display Control Service components.
    • Check C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays or C:\Program Files\HP for remnants and delete them.
  2. Manual Reinstallation of Stable Version
    • Download 1.83.4311.0 from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
    • Use Device Manager → Update Driver → Browse my computer to force-install the older INF file.
  3. Check HP Support Assistant
    • Run HP Support Assistant to confirm if a newer build of HP Display Control Service (beyond 1.85.4388.0) has been silently released.

 Next Steps

  • I recommend holding off on 1.85.4388.0 until HP or Microsoft releases a corrected build. In the meantime, your system will remain stable with the generic Windows driver.

I hope this helps.
