I downloaded the microsoft office suit. There is a window that will not close even after shutdown.

That usually happens when an application is waiting for a response.  Look at the bottom of the screen where the ICONS are.  If one is blinking then click on it.  The application may be requesting you  to "click OK to continue".  

 

 

If the app is phoning home or downloading updates you will have to wait it out.

 

you may be able to right click on the window, look at it properties and get its name.

 

You can also look in the event viewer: system, application, or setup, for a failure or program crash after rebooting to find out what app failed.
