HP Laptop 15-bs0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I encountered this problem about a week ago while playing Minecraft with my friends.

My laptop will usually work well (no fps drops) when doing mundane tasks (although it can overheat easily). When I first started lagging, I thought it was a disk usage problem since task manager showed 100% was being used, and I managed to fix it by preventing Skype from running in the background (it showed no more than 50% after that). However this did not fix my problem, as I am still having heavy lag spikes every 3-4 seconds that last 1-2 seconds, making the game unplayable. I have also noticed Youtube lags in the same way (videos will suffer from fps drops like games although it is less severe). The interesting bit is that my caps lock key blinks twice every time I experience the heavy lag in games and (sometimes) in Youtube (or videos in general). I have read multiple articles where people state that their caps lock is blinking and their screen gets dark, and the difference is that my laptop has a perfectly working screen, but the caps lock still blinks.

I have tried the following without success:

  • Updating BIOS software

  • Deleting and clean installing my AMD drivers

  • Using cold gel packs to cool down my computer (the lag still remained)

  • Uninstalling third party software to make my laptop faster

Everything so far seems to be leading to hardware issue (maybe caused by the overheating?) but I would like to post this first and see if anyone has the same problem before changing anything.

These are my specs:

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz

64 bit operating system

RAM: 12.0 GB

Windows Version: Windows 10 (64 bit)

GPU: AMD Radeon (TM) R7 M340

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Hello, thank you for answering!

I did everything asked and ran both the fast and extensive tests and apparently no problem was found, so hardware failure can be (certainly?) off the table. Are there any other issues that could be causing this?

Hello,

Thank you so much! This has appeared to have fixed my issue. Will be marking as a solution.

Hello, I apologise for the false positive, but my lag seems to have returned (along with the caps lock blinking). Resetting Windows 10 did help for a day, but unfortunately after playing I have started to experience this lag again
