Hi,
I have a monitor that has a DVI port. I also have a USB-C multiport hub with an HDMI port. So I connected this to my HP notebook, and on the other end, I connected the HDMI with a DVI adapter to the monitor. So, something like this:
[HP Notebook] --- usb-c -----[Multiport Hub] ---- hdmi ---------- dvi adapter---[Monitor]
I can see that Windows 11 correctly recognises the 2nd monitor. The problem is that nothing is being displayed on the monitor. It would even go to a sleep mode.
Does anyone know what is causing this?
Thanks.

Hi @alpot,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP Envy Inspire printer says it’s not connected to Wi-Fi even though your network is working, and you’re looking for the Wi-Fi reset option. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and how to reset the connection.
Understand the Wi-Fi reset method
The HP Envy Inspire series does not have a physical Wi-Fi reset button.
Wi-Fi is reset using a button combination on the printer.
Reset the Wi-Fi settings on the printer
Turn the printer on.
Press and hold the Black button and the Cancel (X) button together for 5 seconds, then release.
The blue light should start blinking, indicating Wi-Fi setup mode.
Confirm the printer is in setup mode
A blinking blue light means the printer is ready to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
If the light is solid or off, repeat the reset step once more.
Reconnect using HP Smart
Open the HP Smart app on your phone or computer.
Make sure your device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the printer to use, then select Add Printer or Set up a new printer.
Check Wi-Fi network compatibility
Ensure your router is using 2.4 GHz or a combined 2.4/5 GHz network.
The printer will not connect to a 5 GHz-only network.
Restart printer and router
Turn off the printer and unplug it for 30 seconds.
Restart the router, wait for it to come fully online, then power the printer back on.
Disable VPN or firewall during setup
Turn off any VPN or third-party firewall on the device running HP Smart.
These can prevent the printer from being detected even when Wi-Fi is active.
Check printer status after setup
Once setup is complete, the blue light should be solid.
The printer should show Ready/Online in HP Smart before printing.
I hope this helps.

Where did I mention this in my post? My problem has nothing to do with connecting to a printer. The title itself mentions a display issue, not a printer issue.

Hi @alpot,
Thank you for pointing that out, it looks like there was a mix-up, and the previous response was accidentally from another post. I apologize for the confusion. Let’s address your actual issue with the second display showing blank.
Here’s what you can try:
Check cable and adapter compatibility
DVI is a digital-only signal. Make sure your HDMI → DVI adapter supports the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor.
If possible, try a direct HDMI-to-HDMI connection to confirm the hub/adapter isn’t the issue.
Set the correct display mode in Windows
Press Windows + P and select Extend or Duplicate depending on your setup.
Sometimes Windows detects the monitor but does not automatically output to it.
Verify monitor input source
On the monitor, use the menu to confirm the input is set to DVI.
Some monitors do not auto-switch input sources.
Update graphics drivers
Go to Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU → Update driver.
For Intel/AMD/NVIDIA graphics, download the latest driver from HP support or the GPU manufacturer.
Check resolution and refresh rate
Right-click the desktop → Display settings → Select the second monitor → Advanced display settings.
Ensure the resolution and refresh rate are compatible with the monitor. Sometimes an unsupported resolution will show a black screen.
Test the hub or port
If possible, try a different USB-C port on the notebook, or test the hub with another monitor to rule out hardware issues.
Some multiport hubs have limitations on video output depending on the port used.
Power cycle everything
Disconnect the monitor, hub, and USB-C cable.
Turn off the monitor and laptop, then reconnect and power on.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
1. try a direct HDMI-to-HDMI
This one is ok.
2. select Extend or Duplicate
Tried this both. Still no display
3. Use the menu to confirm the input is set to DVI.
This has been tried many times.
4. Update graphics drivers
There are no new drivers.
5. Check resolution and refresh rate
Tried 60, 70 & 75 but still blank.
6. Test the hub or port
No problem with the hub or port. Connecting my MacBook to the Hub works.
7. Power cycle everything
This does not help.

Hi,
I understand your HP notebook detects the second display in Windows 11, but the monitor remains blank when connected through a USB-C hub using HDMI-to-DVI. Let’s go through a few focused checks to identify what’s causing this behavior.
Confirm USB-C video output capability
Some HP notebooks have USB-C ports that support data and charging only, not video (DisplayPort Alt Mode).
Check your notebook’s specifications to confirm the USB-C port explicitly supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt.
If video over USB-C is not supported, the monitor may be detected logically but will never display an image.
Check HDMI-to-DVI adapter type (very important)
Many HDMI-to-DVI adapters are passive and rely on the source to output a compatible signal.
USB-C hubs often output DisplayPort internally and convert to HDMI, which passive DVI adapters cannot handle.
Use an active HDMI-to-DVI adapter (clearly labeled “active”) to test.
Check HDCP and signal compatibility
Some older DVI monitors do not support HDCP handshakes.
When connected through a hub, the GPU may enforce HDCP, causing a black screen even though the display is detected.
If available, disable HDCP in the graphics control panel or test with a different monitor to confirm.
Force display re-initialization
Open Display settings → Select the second monitor → Click “Advanced display”.
Change the resolution to a very low value (for example 1024×768 at 60 Hz), apply, wait a few seconds, then increase gradually.
This can force the GPU to renegotiate the signal.
Check color format and bit depth
In Advanced display settings, set the color depth to 8-bit and standard RGB.
Higher bit depths can fail on HDMI-to-DVI conversions.
Test without the hub (if possible)
If your HP notebook has a native HDMI port, connect the monitor directly using HDMI-to-DVI.
If this works consistently, it confirms the limitation is with the USB-C hub + adapter signal conversion.
I hope this helps.
