Hi Guys!
I have an HP Omen 16. My issue is, everytime I close out a game or a program that uses apu, it'll switch over just fine back to CPU. However, moments after, my screen just goes black. I know the computer is still up and running because I will still hear whatever I was previously doing/listening to continuing after the screen has went black.

Hi @ShayKelly1021,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing an issue where your HP Omen 16 laptop's screen goes black after switching from an APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) to a CPU (Central Processing Unit) while closing a game or a program. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue.
Update Graphics Drivers
- Check for Updates: Make sure you have the latest drivers for both your integrated APU and dedicated GPU (if applicable). You can usually find these on the HP website or through the manufacturer’s sites (AMD or NVIDIA).
- Install Drivers: Use the latest versions of the drivers, as outdated drivers can cause display issues.
Adjust Power Settings
- Windows Power Options: Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and ensure your power plan is set to High Performance.
- Graphics Settings: In the graphics settings (you can usually find this in the right-click context menu on the desktop), make sure your APU and CPU settings are configured properly.
Check Display Settings
- Project Settings: After switching from a game, try pressing Windows + P and toggling through the display options (PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only). This can sometimes reset the display output.
- Resolution and Refresh Rate: Ensure that your display settings (right-click on the desktop > Display settings) are set to the correct resolution and refresh rate for your monitor.
Disable Sleep and Hibernate
- Disable Sleep Mode: Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep and set sleep mode to Never. This prevents the system from going into sleep mode, which may help prevent the black screen.
Check for Windows Updates
- Update Windows: Make sure your Windows is fully updated, as updates can fix bugs and improve system stability.
Test with an External Monitor
- If you have access to an external monitor, connect your laptop to it. This will help determine if the issue is with the laptop's display or the internal graphics configuration.
Disable Fast Startup
- Turn Off Fast Startup: Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended). This can sometimes resolve issues related to power management.

BIOS Update
- Update BIOS: Check if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop on the HP support page. Updating the BIOS can resolve compatibility issues.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Power Cycle: Shut down your laptop, unplug it from the power source, remove the battery (if possible), and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Then reconnect the battery and power cable and start the laptop again.
Hardware Diagnostics
- Run HP Hardware Diagnostics: Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears. Press F2 to run diagnostics and check for any hardware issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
