Compaq nc6400
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My ATI 1300 display adapter is being identified as a Basic Display Adapter, and display quality is poor on web apps and MSFT Whiteboard does not work at all.

Is there a better driver for this device for WIN 10?

Thank you.

Hi:

There is only the Vista driver, but here is how you should be able to get the Vista driver to work and have the x1300 show up and the graphics work normally.

Download and save this ATI Vista graphics driver.  Do not run it.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38501-39000/sp38833.exe

Download and install this free file utility.  The 2nd file at the top of the page is for 64 bit.

https://www.7-zip.org/

After you install 7-Zip, right click on the graphics driver file you saved.

Select 7-Zip from the menu and have it Extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp38833).

Once that is done, go to the device manager, click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category.

Click on the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.   Click on the Driver tab.  Click on Update driver.

Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and then at the bottom of that window, select the 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.'

Click on Have Disk, and browse to the driver folder that 7-Zip created>Packages>Drivers>Display>LH6A_INF>CH_60303, click Next, and the driver should install.

Once the installation has completed, restart the PC.

I recommend that before you install the driver, that you turn off (uncheck) the fast startup option in the power options section of the Windows control panel.

I have the next model after yours (6910p), which as the x2300 graphics, and with the fast startup option checked, I get a black screen on reboot.

It might be a quirk with my specific notebook, but you can always experiment and turn fast startup back on and see what happens.

From a cold boot with fast startup checked, it works fine.

Good morning Paul;

The ATI utility executes and says it has completed, but the controller has an alarm by it and when I click on it, I get the message "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

I have unchecked fast start, uninstalled the controller and reinstalled with the same results.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

Oops, did not follow the Zip instructions vs letting .exe run. Ran Zip, directed to this folder for driver install, and got same results.

BTW, it also shows up under the USB controllers as "Unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".

Hi, Steve:

Sorry that didn't work.

Running the file may have messed things up, but I couldn't say for sure.

The only way to get those old graphics adapters to work is to manually browse right to the driver setup information file using the method I posted earlier.

You may want to try reinstalling W10 again and start fresh.

If it doesn't work using the method I posted, then the hardware and driver are too old to work on W10.

My nc6400 with the Intel graphics works fine on W10.

Hello Paul,

Check this out. It is from Russia, but I took a chance on it. It updated the driver, and I notice improved graphics, especially text on web pages.
