If I start from the notebook being in the standard open position on my lap, and then fold back to tablet mode (not tilting or rotating the screen to the left or right, just straight back), it enters tablet mode ok. If I tilt the notebook from that position to get to portrait tablet mode, it goes straight to sleep. If I rotate the notebook prior to entering tablet mode, and then fold back, it again goes straight to sleep. So to summarise, it seems I can enter and use in tablet mode so long as I don't rotate left or right to portrait mode (which is the position I actually need). I've scoured the HP community, as well as various sites on the web, but all to no avail thus far.

Hi @JK0924,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I see that you are facing an issue with switching between tablet or laptop mode on your Laptop.
Please follow the below steps to fix the issue.
- Perform a power drain on your PC.
1) Unplug the power cord from the PC & wall.
2) Disconnect the power cable from the AC adapter if it is a detachable part and keep it aside.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the AC adapter, then connect it to the wall and to the charging port on your PC.
5) Power on the PC
- Update the BIOS for your PC by clicking on the link.
Make sure you keep only the charger plugged in while updating the BIOS for your PC.
Click on the + sign next to BIOS and then download the file.
Open the file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
- Please install all the pending updates for the Windows operating system following the below steps.
go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the upgrade is available for your device and you want to proceed, download and install it.
- If that issue still persists, please follow the below steps to further troubleshoot and let me know if that resolves the issue.
Check Power Settings
- Sleep Settings: Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Make sure the settings related to sleep and display are configured properly.
- Tablet Mode Settings: Go to Settings > System > Tablet and check if there are specific settings for handling tablet mode.
Check Device Manager
- Open Device Manager (Win + X and select Device Manager).
- Look under Sensors and ensure that all related devices are working correctly and have up-to-date drivers.
- Check if there are any issues or conflicts indicated in the Device Manager.
Calibration and Orientation Lock
- Screen Calibration: Some devices allow you to calibrate the screen orientation. Search for screen calibration settings or use calibration software if available.
- Orientation Lock: Ensure that orientation lock settings are properly configured. Sometimes, devices have an orientation lock feature that might be interfering with how your notebook transitions to portrait mode.
Check for Conflicting Software
- Third-Party Software: Sometimes third-party software can interfere with system functionality. Try performing a clean boot (search for “msconfig” in the Start menu and configure it for a clean boot) to see if the problem persists.
Test in Safe Mode
- Boot your device into Safe Mode to see if the problem occurs there as well. This can help determine if it’s a software issue.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!
