HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14-cd0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, my HP pen recently broke and I am looking for an alternative. I came across Adonit Ink which seems to have positive review and I intend to give it a try. My notebook model is not listed on their device compatibility site so I emailed them. In their reply, I was asked to check if my device is compatible with the Microsoft Surface Pen because Adonit Ink uses Microsoft Pen Protocol. My device is from the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14-cd0xxx series. Many thanks.

Active Stylus - Compatibility Document

Search the document for a compatible stylus and find additional information about stylus support.

HP PCs - Touchscreen Compatibility with Pen and Stylus

  • If there is an HP Active Stylus available for your model, it should be included in the document.
  • If you are unsure of the model series, click open the appropriate category (Consumer or Business class systems), peruse the list to find supported models.
  • Pen(s) compatible with your computer are marked with a “check mark” to the right of your computer model, in the column(s) under the Pen name / description(s).
  • Additional information can sometimes be found in Advisory Documents for your computer.
  • The document is updated as new information becomes available.

In general, a Stylus that is known to be compatible is the stylus matched to your computer model in the Compatibility document.  In some cases, two stylus models might be listed for a particular computer model.

That means:  It is not known whether your computer supports a Microsoft Surface Pen.

I see (Microsoft) beside the name of the pens. Does that mean they use the Microsoft Pen Protocol?

I do not know whether the use of the word "Microsoft" in this context means that the Microsoft Surface pen uses the same protocol as an 'HP Pen (Microsoft)'  for the purpose of determining compatibility.

In general, our community depends on the same documentation that is available to the public.  Our community does not have any access to internal HP departments for the purpose of obtaining  answers to this kind of question.

The  Compatibility Document  does not directly address the subject of non-HP stylus support.  For example, as one might expect, use data on non-HP pens is not included in the document nor is there a list of non-HP (competitor) stylus / pens that might / would work with HP products.

What to do?

  • Your original post indicates you are already committed to trying the Adonit pen.  Continue with that plan.

OR

  • Use your favorite browser to search for "Microsoft Surface Pen" or "Stylus Protocol" (or other keywords) and look for articles that address which stylus products work with which manufacturers devices.
