My problem is that the white levels (or "contrast") keep dropping when I look at dark images, which of course make bright or normal images uncomfortable to look at. The backlight is fine. I tried looking for solutions to this and I still can't seem to get it working. Even worse, after boot and randomly throughout the day my laptop decides to turn off the automatic dimming temporarily making it seem like whatever I do works before it comes back hours later.

This issue is killing me.

I realised why I couldn't fix it and why it seemed it kept coming back. I never did solve the problem, what happened was that when the laptop was charging the drivers would choose not to dim my display. I tried all sorts of things to solve the problem but once the registry hack didn't work I lost all hope. Turns out I wrote the wrong values in the registry.

In "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\Display\igfxcui\profiles\Media\Brighten Movie" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\Display\igfxcui\profiles\Media\Darken Movie" you need to change the values of "ProcAmpBrightness" to "0.00". I changed those values to "0", which didn't work. Once I changed it to "0.00" everything started working.

Now on battery power, my laptop doesn't dim my display. All this because I forgot an additional ".00".

Seriously, HP and Intel need to provide a WORKING switch in their respective Control Panels. If I want to disable the absolutely horrendous imitation of adaptive brightness, I should be able to do so by activating a switch, NOT by editing values in the registry.

@muizzs,

Good day. Thank you for posting your query in the HP community and a good day to you. I read the post and will be honored to assist you. Great presentation of the issue. Kudos to you for that.

  • Did this occur after a software or Windows update?
  • Please share a screenshot or image of what exactly happens on the screen to assist you correctly.
  • Does the screen brightness dim very much?

Let's try these steps now:

  • Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
  • Check the box that states delete the software for this device.
  • Then restart the computer and update the bios chipset and graphics drivers from this link: http://hp.com/drivers  Select the country and type the product# of the unit. Then follow the onscreen instructions.

Now check for issue resolution. If it continues, then perform relevant steps from this link: https://support.hp.com/ph-en/document/c00832191 (HP Notebook PCs - Display Is Dim or Difficult to Read (Windows 10, 8, 7)

  • Run all the latest Windows updates and ensure that they are installed correctly.
  • Then run all HP support assistant updates and ensure that they are installed correctly on the machine.

Now check for issue resolution. If the issue continues, then create a new local user account as an administrator  from this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/instantanswers/5de907f1-f8ba-4fd9-a89d-efd23fee918c/create-a-loc...

Log into the new user account after restarting your computer.

Now check if the issue gets resolved in the new user account.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂

1 - It's been here since I bought my laptop, and on my other HP laptop, including many others' laptops here in these very forums.
2 - I can't take a screenshot because it is affecting my contrast/"brightness"/saturation levels. That cannot be captured by the OS.
3 - The backlight remains as bright as it did before the dimming (as I said in my post), but the WHITE-LEVELS go down and colours go a bit odd (again, as I said in my post).

There is no "Device Manager" option in the Start menu on Windows 10, but I already know how to open it. Also, which driver should I remove? The NVIDIA display adaptor or the Intel display adaptor?

I do have an update of my problem: The dimming issues only present themselves when I'm running on battery power. When my laptop is receiving power from charging there is no dimming.

@muizzs,

It is nice to hear from you and your continued efforts and patience are appreciated.

  • Firstly there is a device manager in Windows 10. You need to right-click and not left-click.
  • Secondly, an image of the computer screen taken from a smartphone of how the screen looks and shared could help
  • Thirdly please uninstall all the graphics drivers from device manager and perform all the other steps as well.
  • The trick is to remain patient as it is critical to resolving the issue.
