The battery percentage is not showing. Most of the time it is only showing X and when hovering “Unknown” but there are times where it’s showing. However, this time, it is both showing X and Unknown and a -1% beside it. How do i fix it?

Hi @rihudcon,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for sharing the image. We can see that Windows is displaying an X on the battery icon, Unknown, and-1%.

Please try a power reset:

  1. Turn off the notebook.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter and all connected devices.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for approximately 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the notebook.
  5. Check whether Windows now displays the battery percentage.

If the issue continues, run the HP Battery Test:

  1. Turn off the notebook.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F2.
  4. Select Component Tests > Power > Battery > Run once.
  5. Review the result.

If the test shows Calibrate, select Calibrate Battery and follow the on-screen instructions. Calibration resets the battery gauge so that Windows can display the charge level accurately. If the test fails, note the battery status and the 24-digit Failure ID.

You can follow the complete instructions here: HP Notebook PCs - Testing and calibrating the battery (Windows) | HP® Support

If the battery passes, install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers available for the exact product number B98LHAV from HP Support and restart the notebook: HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fc0000 (B98LHAV) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support.

Please let us know the result shown by the F2 Battery Test. This will confirm whether the issue is related to the battery hardware or the battery-level reading in Windows.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello sir, thank you for this. I followed through all the steps. During the battery test, the result shows it passed so I installed the latest BIOS. However here's the problem, just like i said above, there are times where the battery percentage shows—after running the battery test, I immediately install the BIOS, and during this I am charging the laptop and the battery percentage shows. After the BIOS update was installed, battery percentage is still showing, but once it is done charging and is on 100% it came back to showing X and -1% again and the light for the indicator when charging is color orange instead of white

Hi @rihudcon,

 Thank you for the update,
Since the F2 Battery Test passed and the battery percentage appears intermittently but changes back to X, "Unknown," and -1% once fully charged, this may indicate an issue with the battery's communication circuit, battery calibration, or a degraded battery rather than a BIOS issue alone.

Could you kindly confirm the following:

  • Has the battery ever been replaced? If yes, is it an original HP battery or a third-party replacement?
  • Have you already performed a manual battery calibration using the HP Battery Calibration process?

Also, please check for any errors in Device Manager:

  1. Go to Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Batteries.
  3. Let us know if you see any warning icons or error messages listed under the battery devices.

If there are no errors, please try the following:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Batteries.
  3. Right-click the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery (usually the second entry) and select Uninstall device.
  4. Shut down the notebook.
  5. Disconnect the charger.
  6. Remove the battery (if removable).
  7. Press and hold the Power button for 60 seconds.
  8. Reinstall the battery only.
  9. Turn on the notebook and check whether the battery percentage displays correctly.

I hope this helps.
