AMD A12-9720P RADEON R7, 12 COMPUTE CORES 4C+8G

video1: AMD Radeon (TM) 535DX

video2: AMD Radeon R7 Graphics

Dear HP, developers, engineers and volunteers, I'm so excited to ask for your help! After updating the BIOS to version F.55, the discrete video card AMD RADEON 535 stopped working, which is great because it already happened on version F.51 of the BIOS, but on version F.52 everything worked fine. I can't roll back to version F.52 in any way, so I'm super excited to see what you can do. I can't find a place for this problem, but I'm sure you'll figure it out! I'm sure you'll be able to help!

Hi Alden4

Thank you so much for your advice.

Unfortunately, nothing I do seems to work, and I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with the F.55 BIOS firmware. HP knows about the issue, but they're not saying when they'll fix it, and I'm starting to lose hope.I've been comparing the F.52 and F.55 BIOS, and I noticed some differences in the graphics adapter parameter settings. Now, I know that it's not possible to roll back to F.52 using standard or alternative methods, so the only option left is to roll back through the programmer in the service.

Thank you so much, Alden4, for your help. I really appreciate it!

P.S. I've found another method of rolling back on the forum here. I'll try it out and let you know how it goes.

Hi @Coltdred,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with your discrete AMD Radeon 535 DX graphics card after updating your HP laptop BIOS to version F.55, while it was working fine with BIOS version F.52. Unfortunately, since you can't roll back the BIOS to version F.52, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to potentially resolve this issue.

Check Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
  • Look for the "Display Adapters" section and check if the discrete AMD Radeon 535 DX is listed.
  • If it is, right-click on it and select "Update Driver" to ensure it's using the latest compatible drivers.
  • If it's not listed, try right-clicking on your system's name at the top of Device Manager and select "Scan for hardware changes."

Reinstall Graphics Drivers:

  • Sometimes a BIOS update may cause driver issues. Try reinstalling the graphics drivers:
    1. Uninstall both the AMD Radeon drivers and the integrated graphics drivers.
    2. Download the latest drivers from the AMD website.
    3. Reboot your laptop and install the downloaded drivers.

Check BIOS Settings:

  • Enter BIOS by pressing the F10 key during startup.
  • Look for settings related to graphics, such as "Switchable Graphics" or "Discrete Graphics". Make sure these are enabled if available.
  • If the settings seem correct, try disabling any setting that might force the system to use integrated graphics and save the changes.

Try Using a Different BIOS Version:

  • Even though you're unable to roll back directly to version F.52, you could try installing a different version of the BIOS.
    • Check HP's support page for your laptop to see if they offer a way to install a previous BIOS version.
    • Sometimes, users have been able to manually flash older BIOS versions by following specific instructions provided by HP support.

System Restore:

  • If the problem occurred immediately after the BIOS update, performing a system restore to a point before the BIOS update might help.
    • Type "System Restore" in the Windows search bar, select "Create a restore point," and follow the prompts to restore your system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4

Thank you for your prompt reply. Unfortunately there was no opportunity to reply to you earlier, but I have seen your posts.

I followed the steps you stated in your post and I can tell you the following:

    1. I updated the driver immediately after updating the bios. In ‘device manager’ the adapter is installed and ready to work. No errors.

I noticed one message after updating the bios at the first start of the system ‘Hardware configuration has changed’, this message I received on version F.51. I think this is important.

     2. The bios ‘advanced settings’ tab that can really help with this problem is inaccessible/locked. In fact, that's the whole problem.

     3. Restoring/reinstalling the system does not solve the problem.

     4. My attempts to roll back the version with HP tools and instructions from the official site have not yet been successful or maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I hope this information will be helpful to you in finding a solution.

Hi @Coltdred,

Thank you for your response,

It seems you've provided a detailed breakdown of the troubleshooting steps you've tried to resolve issues related to your AMD Radeon 535 DX graphics card after a BIOS update. Based on your progress, I'll suggest some advanced troubleshooting steps.

BIOS Downgrade (Manual Flash)

Since rolling back the BIOS through standard HP tools hasn't worked, a manual flash may help:

  • Step 1: Download the desired BIOS version (F.52) from HP's support site for your laptop.
  • Step 2: Use the HP BIOS Recovery utility:
    • Power off the laptop.
    • Hold the Windows + B keys (or Windows + V for some models) and then press the power button for a few seconds.
    • Release the power button while continuing to hold the keys.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to manually install the older BIOS file stored on a USB stick.
  • Ensure Secure Boot is disabled temporarily if the utility doesn't work.

Unlock Advanced BIOS Settings

Access to advanced settings can sometimes help:

  • Use third-party tools like AMIBCP (Advanced BIOS Configuration Program) to unlock settings.
  • Note: Proceed with caution as improper changes in the BIOS can brick the system.

Force GPU Detection via Windows

If the GPU is still not detected:

  • Boot into Safe Mode:
    • Type msconfig in Windows search, go to the Boot tab, and select Safe Boot > Minimal.
  • In Safe Mode, remove the GPU drivers completely using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
  • Restart normally, and install the correct AMD drivers from scratch.

Modify Boot Configuration Data (BCD)

If the system isn't initializing the discrete GPU due to BIOS changes, modifying the boot configuration may help:

  • Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

bcdedit /set pciexpress forcedisable

  • Reboot the laptop and check for GPU functionality in Device Manager.

Revert to Factory Settings in BIOS

If the BIOS update altered specific hardware configurations:

  • Enter the BIOS (F10 during boot).
  • Look for the option to Restore Default Settings or Load Factory Defaults.
  • Save and exit, then check if the GPU is detected.

Check Power Configuration

BIOS updates can alter power delivery settings for discrete GPUs:

  • In the BIOS, ensure any power-saving features (e.g., "Dynamic Power Management") are disabled.
  • Ensure the laptop is plugged into a power source when testing for GPU detection, as discrete GPUs often require AC power.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
