Microsoft Windows 11

I have a black screen when I turn on my computer.  The only way I can make it so I can see is to connect my laptop to an external monitor via HDMI cable.  Once I have a display, I press Window+ctrl+shift+b and then I can get my laptop screen to work.  When I turn my laptop off or restart it, I have to go through this process again.

I have no clue how this happened.  I just went to turn on my laptop yesterday morning, and I had this problem.  I figured out this temporary (annoying) fix by searching online.  How do I fix this permanently?

Hi @Tadjn, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your laptop is having issues initializing the built-in display on boot, but it works once forced to refresh via Win + Ctrl + Shift + B. This could be caused by a driver issue, power settings, or hardware failure. Try the following steps to permanently fix it:

1. Update or Reinstall Graphics Drivers

Update Drivers:

  • Right-click StartDevice Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters.
  • Right-click your GPU (Intel UHD/AMD/NVIDIA) → Update driverSearch automatically.
  • Restart your laptop.

Reinstall Drivers:

  • In Device Manager, right-click your GPU and select Uninstall device.
  • Check Delete the driver software for this device if available, then uninstall.
  • Restart your laptop, and Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
  • If the problem persists, manually download and install the latest driver from the manufacturer’s website (Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA).

2. Check Display Settings

  1. With the external monitor connected, right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  2. Scroll to Multiple displays and ensure your laptop’s screen is set as the primary display.
  3. If it shows Disconnect this display next to your laptop screen, change it to Extend or Duplicate display.
  4. Apply changes, then disconnect the external monitor and restart.

3. Disable Fast Startup

  1. Open Control PanelPower Options.
  2. Click Choose what the power buttons doChange settings that are currently unavailable.
  3. Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) and save changes.
  4. Restart and check if the issue persists.

4. Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM

  1. Open Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Run the following commands one by one:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    sfc /scannow
  3. Restart your laptop after the process completes.

5. Reset BIOS to Default

  1. Turn off your laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press F10 (or your laptop’s BIOS key) repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  3. Look for an option like Load Setup Defaults or Reset to Default.
  4. Save and exit BIOS.

6. Check Hardware (Backlight or Display Cable)

If none of the above solutions work, your internal display may have a backlight failure or loose cable.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
