Hi there
I'm stuck with our two HP Elitebook x360 G5 that we have bought recently. I reinstalled Windows 10 Pro 2004 without any Drivers on the notebook. After the fresh install I am able to login to the system without any issues. After some time Windows automatically installs the (more or less) latest driver for the graphics card. As soon as I then restart the system, I quickly see the blue Windows logo and after that every thing is black. I don't even see the login screen.
I am able to boot in safe mode and remove the driver for the graphics card but after I do a normal startup windows automatically reinstalls the intel driver leading to the same issue.
What I've done so far.
- Updated the firmware
- Used the driver directly from HP
- Used the latest driver directly from intel (100.8336)
- Used an old version directly from intel (100.6912)
- updated the chipset
- tried with Windows 10 1909
As mentioned: This is a completely fresh install and it only seems to work with the default Windows-Driver. As soon as the Intel Driver gets installed, I get the black screen. Latest after the next reboot.
Does anybody know what this could be?
Best regards

Hello
I'm missing that specific model. but I installed 1909 on other HO model with the same CPU version. I geuss you should have a Core i5 or i7 8X50U.
I coudl try to install 2004 on one of other models.
One thing I can suggest you is this.
in Windows 10 it is possible to stop Windows update to install Drivers.
you can do it easily using gpedit.msc , here more instructions: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-automatic-driver-updates-windows-10
In that way you can :
discconect from internet
Reboot in safe mode
remove Intel graphics driver
reboot without being connected to internet
disable Windows update driver download
you should have a standard VGA driver
install latest driver from HP web site
reboot and check if it will work or not.
bye

Hi, thanks for your reply.
The thing is that I am able to install the latest driver from hp or from intel directly. It's just that those are not working as well. The only possibility for me to have an image on the screen is by not using the intel driver, but the basic Windows driver. And this is not really a satisfying solution

Hello David
you can't use the X360 1040 G5 with standard Windows driver. that is not acceptable.
it's not clear to me if it was working fine with 1909 or with the Windows 10 OS you had on the unit before to try 2004.
Do you know that you notebook supports HP Sure recover ? but in that case you will have back HP WIndows 10 OS of the version decided by HP. not sure if it will be 1903 or 1909.
bye

Hi
I also do not want to use the basic windows driver. Thats at the moment the only driver version that is at least showing an image on the screen.
I have tried with 1909 and 2004, both were not working. Now with 1709 it's working, but 1709 is not supported anymore.
I do not have check if it supports Sure recover, but as I'm using it for our company I need to have a clean install and sooner or later I need to be able to upgrade to the latest version.
Best regards
