Please try performing a 'Hard Reset'.
- Turn off the computer.
- Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.
- Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.
- Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
- Remove the battery from the battery compartment.
- Press and hold down the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge from the capacitors that protect the memory.
- Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook computer, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.
- Press the Power button to turn on the computer.
- If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter key.

Please give me a few more details about your issue.
What Windows version are you using. Windows 7, 8, 10,?
What is the model number of your system?
What exactly happens when you power on? Do you see the HP logo? Does Windows start to load then goes blank? Any other helpful details you can think of.

Hello, and thank you for responding.
I'm using Windows 7.
When I turn on my system the screen stays black/blank. The drive starts up for a few seconds. Then goes quiet for a couple of minutes and then starts up again. All this goes on and the screen is black.
The Cap lock light keeps blinking as does the Numbers lock light.
I have a Pavilion Dv4 -1220us.
I have gone through the options you have listed regarding to taking battery out, unplugging AC adapter, pushing on button for 15 and 40 seconds with no power source. Blank screen still there.
Thank you,
Gailstrail
