Example: Pavilion x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)
When I turn on the device I get to the screen where I enter my pin okay, enter the pin, then the desktop (?) page loads, with the task bar at the bottom. Only, the screen continually blinks every 2-3 seconds and is totally non responsive. It is completely locked, blinking. I was able to open the Support Assistant without it blinking and run all the trouble shooting and fixes, but the screen is still blinking.  What is going on?  Thanks.

@dwcatty

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you updated Graphics and Chipset drivers?
  • Have you checked the display on an external monitor?

Let’s try these steps to resolve the problem:

I recommend you attempt to access the BIOS screen by tapping on F10 while the computer is restarting,

If the issue persists in the BIOS screen which is outside windows, it would confirm a hardware failure.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi, thank you for your response.  This is my wife's tablet so I will try to answer your questions as best we know the responses.

We are not aware if there was a recent update prior to the issue.

This morning I was able to connect the tablet to the internet, but am not aware if Graphics or Chipset drivers are up to date.

We have no external monitor to connect to. If I knew how, I would connect it to my laptop, but we have no monitor.

As far as tapping the F10 key on restart, I did that but nothing happened.  I will say that when I open the HP Support Assistant, it does not flash.

I will say that when I went into the Support Assistant this morning after connecting to the internet that there was a BIOS update available that I am downloading now.  I will report back if the update fixes the issue.

Update (F .39) did not fix the problem.  Still blinking.

No blinking on any of the update pages through the Support Assistant, only on the home screen.  Cannot open any tabs.

Thank you for posting back.

Change the notebook display settings

  1. Close all open windows.
  2. Right-click the desktop and select Properties.
  3. Click the Settings tab on the Display Properties window.
  4. Under Screen Resolution, move the slider to adjust the display resolution slider. Figure : Screen Resolution slider.
  5. Click OK to change the settings.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you for your efforts to help.  This, unfortunately did not do the trick.  The desk top screen is still blinking approximately every two seconds, and I cannot get from it to any app, open the internet or basically do anything with the tablet.

Your suggestion was to right click on the desk top and open Properties.  I do not have Properties as an option when I right click.  Today when I right click I get a pop up box with four sections that vanishes with every blink.  The  choices within the sections are as follows:

The first section has "View, Sort by" and "Refresh."  The second section has a gray-out "Paste" and "Paste shortcut," and "Next desktop background."  The third has "New" and a > to more options that I don't have enough time to click on.  The final section has a line each for "Display settings" and "Personalize."

Yesterday there was a separate line with the dropbox logo and "Send with transfer..." but that line is not there today.

When first starting the tablet I am able to click on the "Display settings" option and get a pop up screen.  This screen, purple/pink with a wheel with spikes (the settings wheel, I believe), does not blink.  However that is the only thing that appears in the window; the settings wheel, no choices.

Yesterday, when I was first able to get the settings window to pop up, I had another pop up with a two line error message.  Unfortunately I did not write down what that error message said, and when I've been able to get the settings to pop up again that error message has not returned.  Right clicking on the settings window only gets "Restore/Move/Size/Minimize/Maximize/Close."

Thank you for any additional thoughts.

Dear Echo_Lake,

Knock on wood - success.

I'm not exactly sure what happened.  This morning the tablet was installing an update; where and how it got that update I do not know, we thought it had been turned off when we went to bed but when we got up and opened the lid it advised "Installing update" and to not turn off the computer.  After it went from 2% to 100% we got the HP startup screen with the hp logo and spinning dots, but new, at the bottom of the screen was the message: "Scanning and repairing drive (C:): 100% complete."  This stayed on the screen for several minutes.  Once we entered the pin the desktop appeared and ... has not blinked!  It's a miracle!

Before it changes it's mind I am downloading my wife's 18,233 pictures (most of the grandchildren) to an external hard drive.  We haven't gotten on the web yet - recovering the pictures was the paramount goal.  But (so far) it appears the tablet is functioning properly.

Thank you for your interest and attempts to assist.  I guess we can mark my issue resolved, although I have no real guidance for anyone reading this thread in the future other than to persist.  In the words of Jim Valvano: Don't give up, don't ever give up.
