This is a brand new (24 hours old) laptop. No matter what I do the display is simply awful. It is flat, grainy and difficult to read. I've adjusted brightness, but this doesn't help. The display quality is consistently bad on and offline regardless of app or use. Everything else seems good, but this is really nasty. What am I doing wrong and how can I resolve this matter? Thanks for any help -

Welcome to the HP Forums!
This is a wonderful place to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips.
I reviewed your post and understand that you are facing issues with the display on your computer.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂
In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.
- Is the computer connected to Internet?
- What is the exact model for your computer?
- Have you installed all the Windows updates on the computer?
- Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting?
Meanwhile, I recommend you make sure that the display settings are correct.
Here is how it is done.
Right click on the desktop, then click the "Display settings" button.
Click the "Advanced display settings" button.
You can select the correct screen resolution.
If you continue to face the issue, I recommend you update the bios and the graphics driver from the below link and test.
Let me know how it goes. Awaiting your reply!

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.
- Is the computer connected to Internet? Yes, it is connected via wireless and I have also connected via direct hardwired -- this makes no difference
- What is the exact model for your computer? HP Laptop -17 - By0xxx as identified by support assistant
- Have you installed all the Windows updates on the computer? Yes. To be clear: the issue existed on initial boot. The computer was purchased on Monday and setup that evening. During setup, as you know, Windows goes out to search for recent updates and then installs those updates - this was done successfully
- Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting? I followed the same procedure as your outlined in your post and have done this twice. If anything, the display is worse and seems to be getting darker despite being set at the highest brightness level.
If you continue to face the issue, I recommend you update the bios and the graphics driver from the below link and test.
http://hp.care/2nikIQ9 ...I clicked on this link and entered my serial # as requested by the system. The system then kicked out and stated that the serial # is invalid. This is the serial # identified by HP when I used the "Let HP identify your product" utility. I then entered the product # instead and it still does not recognize that #. I varified that these are the #s on the tag hidden under the battery. UGH!
Meanwhile...I don't seem to making any progress and the display is pretty awful.

It looks like you were interacting with The_Fossette, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out. I'm KrazyToad & I'm at your service.
Please update the Graphics driver from Device Manager
- Select the Start button, type Device Manager, and select it from the list of results.
- Look for Display Adapters and expand the List
- Look for Graphics driver then right-click it, and select Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If these steps don't work, try reinstalling the driver: Open Device Manager, right-click the Graphics driver and select Uninstall. Restart your PC and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
You can also download the Graphics driver and BIOS from this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-17-by0000-laptop-pc/20395856
Keep us posted how it goes

Thanks for your reply.
I followed your suggestions and updated the graphics driver and bios. I then uninstalled and then reinstalled the graphic driver. Unfortunately, none of this had the desired effect. The display remains flat, dull and fuzzy at the edges of the screen. It's as if the brightness is simply lacking despite being set at highest (brightest) setting. If this were an image I was trying to brighten, I would say the contrast is lacking. [Don't know if that makes sense...I do photography and that's how I would see this as image] The display has a rather gray cast, again if that makes sense. Anyway...still no better. Thanks!

Please check in the BIOS and let me know how the display looks.
Shut down the Notebook and upon restarting keep tapping the F10 key till you see System Configuration Screen ( BIOS ). Let me know if the Screen looks grainy and blur.
You can also connect an external Monitor and check the Display. If the display is fine on the external monitor, then it will be an issue with the LCD.
If the issue persists, you can get the Notebook replaced at the Store you purchased it from since it is brand new
Else you can also contact our Phone Support
