HP Notebook - 17-bs061st
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I cannot get the built in monitor on this laptop to work.  I have tried installing and updating drivers.  The display works fine when connecting an external monitor, but nothing that I do seems to make the first monitor work.  I just get a black screen.

Hi @mcmeg22,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the built-in monitor on your HP Notebook - 17 is not working but an external monitor works fine, it could indicate a hardware issue or a configuration problem. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot.

Check Display Settings

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  • Under Multiple displays, make sure that "Show only on 1" is not selected. Set it to "Duplicate" or "Extend" to see if the built-in display responds.
  • Check if the built-in monitor is detected. If not, click Detect.

Test with Function Keys

  • Try toggling the display output using the function keys (usually Fn + F4 or Fn + F8, depending on the model) to switch between the laptop screen and external monitor.

Check Brightness Settings

  • Ensure that the brightness is not set too low. Use the brightness keys (Fn + brightness key, typically on the F-key row) to increase the brightness.

Enter BIOS/UEFI

  • Restart the laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI by pressing the required key (F10, Esc, or Del) at startup.
  • If the built-in monitor displays the BIOS/UEFI screen, the issue is likely software-related (Windows or drivers). If it doesn’t show anything here either, it may indicate a hardware issue.

Update/ Rollback Display Driver

  • Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
  • Expand the Display adapters section.
  • Right-click on your graphics driver and choose Update driver. If this doesn't help, try rolling back to a previous version (right-click > Properties > Driver tab > Rollback Driver).

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect all external devices.
  • Remove the battery (if removable) and unplug the charger.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the charger and power it on again to see if the built-in display starts working.

Check for Hardware Issues

  • If none of the above steps work, there could be a hardware issue with the built-in monitor or its connection. Common issues include:
    • Loose cable: The connection between the motherboard and the screen might be loose.
    • Faulty display: The screen itself could be damaged.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
