Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

HP Envy 17t-j000
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop has a built-in webcam that does not have any driver (active or inactive) in the device manager. Applications such as Zoom, YouCam5 or Camera say there is no attached webcam. I have followed all suggestions to update the operating system and driver but when I log into the HP site with my computer identified, and navigate to the software/driver download section, there is no driver for a webcam or camera. How could this be? In the device manager, there are two Imaging Devices identified that I know about that are inactive (a microscope camera and a scanner), but not the built-in webcam is missing. When I try to manually install a camera/webcam driver, the driver application does not recognize the built-in webcam. In the UEFI hardware diagnostics application, the Webcam Connection Test: PASSED. So the computer has to have an attached webcam in order to pass this test. And, NO, my laptop does NOT have a webcam kill switch on the left, right, back, front, top or bottom. The last time the webcam worked was years ago as I don't use it much.

1) So where on the HP website is the built-in webcam driver for my computer?

2) How do I get my webcam working again?

@GTS4 Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are facing issues with webcams.

Do not worry. I will try to fix the issue.

I have a few steps that should help resolve this concern.

Here's a related post that seems to have helped others: Click here

(Though the header may be different, the solution should work for your concern as well).

For troubleshooting the webcam issues:

You can open webcam software, such as You-Cam, Skype, or Live Messenger, but the video does not display in the main viewing window. Use the following steps, in the order, they are presented, until the webcam video displays in your webcam software:

Step 1: Make sure the webcam is the selected video/capture device for your webcam software

Your webcam must be selected as the video capture device in your webcam software. If the computer has multiple video input sources, your webcam software might be connected to something other than your webcam.

To select the webcam as your video source, open your webcam software and look for the video camera, video source, or video caption in the software's properties or preferences. Here are some common examples of selecting the webcam as the video source:

NOTE:

The name of your webcam might display as USB Video Device, HP Webcam, USB 2.0 Camera, HP Pavilion Webcam, or similar. If you do not know the name, select a name to see if video displays. If not, try selecting other video device names until you see the video from your webcam display in the window.

I followed your instructions about the getting the driver from the HP recovery manager but alas, there is no driver listed for a webcam or camera or anything even close. I can't understand it. Where is the webcam or camera driver?

@GTS4

I understand your concerns.

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

  1. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

  1. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  2. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  3. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also, ensure Windows is up to date

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available.

Have a nice day!!

Sorry, there is no HP built in webcam driver for my laptop (Envy 17t-j000) that was identified by:

1) Manually logging into the HP Software and Driver support page for my specific computer

2) HP Recovery Manager

3) HP support Assistant

The error code is: 0xA00F4244<NoCamerasAreAttached.

The UEFI Webcam Connection Test: PASSED and is reported in the Test Logs so there is definitely a webcam in my computer.

My computer does not have a webcam disabling switch.

I have tried other HP webcam software downloaded from HP and it does not work with my computer. This was for an external webcam. I am beginning to think that HP no longer supports the built-in webcam for my 7 year old HP laptop. Is that true?

@GTS4

I understand your concerns.

In that case, I would suggest you contact our phone support and check for the support option. They will help you.

Here is how you can get in touch with phone support.

1)Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/

2)Select the product type.

3)Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.

4)Select the country from the drop-down.

5)You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.

We are experiencing longer than expected wait times to reach an agent due to the CoViD-19 impact and there might have been issues in you getting the expected resolution on the issue.

Have a nice day!!
