@Socratease, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP TrueVision HD camera keeps freezing despite Device Manager indicating it's functioning properly, the issue is likely related to drivers or software. Here’s a step-by-step troubleshooting guide specifically for your HP Laptop 17-cn3033cl (8M5Q4UA) running Windows 10:
Step 1: Reinstall the Camera Driver
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices or Cameras and right-click on HP TrueVision HD Camera.
- Choose Uninstall device and check Delete the driver software for this device (if available), then click Uninstall.
- Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall a generic driver.
Step 2: Update to the Latest Driver from HP
- Visit the HP Drivers Page for your model.
- Enter 8M5Q4UA or 17-cn3033cl.
- Look under Driver – Keyboard, Mouse, and Input Devices or Software – Multimedia.
- Download and install any camera driver listed.
- Restart your laptop after installation.
Step 3: Check for Windows Updates
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install any optional hardware updates if available (look under "View optional updates").
Step 4: Use HP Support Assistant
- Download or launch HP Support Assistant from here.
- Run a scan and update all recommended drivers, especially those related to input devices or the camera.
Step 5: Test in a Clean Boot Environment
This helps identify software conflicts:
- Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and click Disable all.
- Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager. Disable all items.
- Restart your system and test the camera in a simple app like Camera or Zoom.
Step 6: Test Camera in Other Apps
Try using the camera in:
- Windows Camera App
- Zoom / Teams / Skype
- An online webcam test tool (search for "webcam test" and use a reputable one)
If it freezes in one app but works in others, the issue may be app-specific.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
