If your HP Spectre x360's webcam shutter is not functioning properly, follow these steps to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue:

1. Check the Webcam Privacy Switch or Shutter Key

Webcam Privacy Switch:

  • Locate the webcam privacy switch on the side of your computer (usually on the right or left side or near the webcam itself).
  • Slide the switch towards the icon associated with the webcam to turn it on.

Webcam Shutter Key:

  • The webcam shutter key is typically located on the action key row of your keyboard.
  • Press the webcam shutter key to open the shutter. On some models, you might need to press the fn key together with the shutter key.

  • Light Indicator:
    • When the shutter key light is on, the webcam is off.
    • When the light is off, the webcam is on.

2. Ensure Software is not Blocking the Webcam

  • Verify that no other software applications are currently using the webcam, as this might interfere with the shutter.
  • Confirm that your webcam software is the selected device for video capture in the application you're using (such as Zoom, Skype, etc.).

3. Update Webcam Drivers

  • Use HP Support Assistant to check for any available updates.
  • Alternatively, you can manually update or reinstall the webcam drivers through Device Manager.

Update or Change the Webcam Driver

Update via HP Support Assistant:

  • Open HP Support Assistant and click on the Updates tab.
  • Download and install any available update for the webcam.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

@johi9909, Thanks for the update, and I’m really sorry to hear the shutter is still physically stuck—must be frustrating, especially when everything else seems to respond. Let’s try to get this sorted out together.

Since the shutter key light changes but the actual shutter remains closed, it sounds like the mechanism itself might be jammed or unresponsive. Let’s rule out a few more things:

1. Can you gently inspect the webcam area?
Do you notice any visible obstruction or debris near the camera lens? Sometimes even a thin piece of dust or residue can block the mechanical shutter. A soft microfiber cloth can help here—just be gentle.

2. Did the issue begin after a recent Windows or BIOS update?
Sometimes a firmware glitch can interfere with hardware responses. Let me know if you recall installing updates before this happened.

3. Can you try a quick hardware reset?

Power off the laptop

Unplug any peripherals

Hold the power button for 15 seconds

Then turn it back on and try toggling the shutter again

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
