Hi there,
My camera randomly goes off and on. I do have a shutter off/on button. it is not a key. it is a tiny button on the side of the laptop. I keep it "on," but the camera keeps going on and off randomly. More off than on. It always goes off when I'm on a video call (Zoom, Teams, etc.), and doesn't come back on. When it's off, I get the error message...
Does anyone have any advice for this?

Hi @debsangon,
Thank you for the response.
Try these steps:
Check Physical Connections: Ensure that if your camera is integrated, it is free of obstacles. For a USB camera, verify that it is securely connected to the laptop or desktop, and consider trying different USB ports.
Update Camera Drivers:
- Go to the Device Manager by searching for it in the Start Menu.
- Expand the 'Imaging Devices' section.
- Right-click on your camera and select 'Update Driver'.
- Choose 'Search automatically for updated driver software'.
Permissions and Settings:
- Go to 'Settings' > 'Privacy' > 'Camera'.
- Make sure that apps like Zoom and Teams have permission to use the camera.
Disable and Enable the Camera:
- In the Device Manager, right-click the camera under 'Imaging Devices'.
- Select 'Disable device', and then enable it again.
Check for Conflicting Software:
- Ensure no other application is using the camera.
- Try closing all apps and just opening one app that requires the camera to see if the problem persists.
Run Windows Troubleshooter:
- Go to 'Settings' > 'Update & Security' > 'Troubleshoot'.
- Find and run the troubleshooter for 'Hardware and Devices'.
Check Camera in Safe Mode:
- Restart your computer in Safe Mode and test the camera to rule out software conflicts.
I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi_Kenshi,
I have tried your suggestions below...
Under "Imaging Devices" there is no camera listed. Only Printers.
Under Privacy...under App Permissions...I clicked on camera. Everything is turned "on." I continue scrolling down to "related settings" and clicked on camera device settings. Under connected cameras it says, "No camera found."
And just to be clear, the camera is part of the laptop (in it), it's not external/detachable. I have a teeny-tiny switch on the narrow side of the laptop that I can switch the camera on and off. But it doesn't matter if it's on or off, Throughout the day, the dark grey square camera picture keeps popping up on my screen as I'm working. It pops up randomly, all the time. Sometimes it has a slash through it (no camera) and sometimes it does not have a slash through it.
Besides the advice you've already given, what else can I do/check?
Thank you.
Debbie

Hi @debsangon,
Thank you for the response.
Here's what you can try next:
Perform a Hard Reset (EC Reset)
This can help resolve power-related hardware quirks:
Shut down your laptop completely.
Unplug the power adapter.
Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
Plug the power back in and power on the device.
Re-enable the Camera via BIOS
Sometimes the camera can be disabled at the firmware level:
Restart the laptop and immediately press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
Navigate to the Security or Advanced tab.
Look for an option like “Integrated Camera” or “Webcam” — make sure it’s Enabled.
Save and exit (usually F10 again).
Check HP's Camera Driver and Firmware
Since this is an HP Envy x360 15m-dr1012dx:
Go to: HP Software & Drivers – 15m-dr1012dx
Install:
Latest Camera Driver (even if the camera isn’t listed)
Any System BIOS Update
HP System Event Utility (helps manage hardware function keys and toggles)
HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI
Let’s rule out hardware failure:
Turn off your laptop.
Press the power button and immediately start tapping Esc, then press F2.
Choose Component Tests → Camera.
If no test option appears, it likely means the system can’t detect the camera at the hardware level, reinforcing the idea that the switch or camera module may be faulty.
I hope this helps.
