HP Chromebook 14b-na0000 (2H5H6AV)
Chrome OS

My camera light is on but the screen is black? There is NO lens cover.  I can see the light is ON.  Audio works but not video.  I have allowed permissions and it still has black screen.  I tried DUO and i get the same thing.  There is a "green" dot in lower right corner that says "camera in use" so I know there is some kind of connection.  I do not know what else to do. I do not want to reset because I do not want to lose all of my information on this chromebook (i.e. files/photos/documents..etc)  HP will not assist unless i pay.  I am sure there is some type of solution.

Hi TD206,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Chromebook 14b-Na0000's camera. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
It sounds like you've already tried some basic troubleshooting steps. Here are a few more things you can try to resolve the issue with your HP Chromebook 14b-Na0000's camera:

  • Check for Updates: Ensure that your Chromebook is up to date with the latest Chrome OS updates. Sometimes, system updates can fix bugs or issues with hardware.
  • Powerwash: A Powerwash is a reset feature in Chrome OS that restores your Chromebook to its factory settings. Before doing this, ensure you have backed up your important files, photos, and documents to Google Drive or an external storage device. To perform a Powerwash, go to Settings > Advanced > Reset Settings> Powerwash.
  • Check Chromebook Camera Settings: Sometimes, the camera settings may be misconfigured. Go to Settings > Advanced > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Camera. Ensure that the site you are trying to use the camera with is allowed to access it.
  • Hardware Check: If none of the software solutions work, there may be a hardware issue with the camera itself.
  • Chromebook Recovery: If you're still facing issues after trying the above steps, you might need to consider Chromebook recovery. This process involves reinstalling Chrome OS, which can sometimes fix persistent issues. You can find instructions for Chromebook recovery on the official Chromebook support website.
