Compaq Presario CQ57
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Laptop: compaq presario cq57

Monitor: dell x3782

I dropped my laptop a few years ago, and the screen is now displaying something similar to the link below:

http://c8.alamy.com/comp/C2AF0D/dropped-laptop-causing-damage-to-casing-and-breaking-lcd-screen-C2AF...

This laptop has a VGA port, but no HDMI port. The laptop seems to be turning on fine. I simply can't see the screen.

It turns out that the monitor I have will not display the computer. It states that there is no cable until I connect the VGA to the laptop and then the monitor turns off and the button turns orange.

Any ideas as to what I am doing incorrectly? I've tried hitting F4 with and without hitting the right arrow three times, and it doesn't change anything.

Is it possible to use an adapter to display the VGA on HDMI? Are the “injuries” internal and far more serious than the LCD screen issue? Are the laptop and monitor incompatible?

Any ideas as to what I am able to do without replacing the screen? I don't want to spend a large amount of money on something I likely won't use if I am able to retrieve the information I need to from the laptop.

Thank you in advance!

Try the windows key + p and hit the up and down arrow and enter alternately until you get a picture on the external monitor.
