How can I connect a 4k  60 Hz external monitor to my laptop?

Very good question. Your machine has

   1 USB 3.1 (Type-C™);

   2 USB 3.1 (1 HP Sleep and Charge);

   1 HDMI;

   1 headphone/microphone combo

The USB type C port is  simply an USB 3.1 Gen 1 port with Type-C connector and the HDMI port only HDMI v1.4 supporting up to 1920×1080 @ 60 Hz. Therefore you can use USB 3.1 type A port with an adapter such as:

I have the same question about Elitebook 840 G5. I want to get 4K at 60Hz. HDMI only goes up to 29 Hz, as I found out because it is HDMI 1.4b. Shame on HP for not supporting HDMI 2.0 on this laptop. So I tried going via the USB-C port using this adapter cable, which the manufacturer claims will support 4K at 60 Hz:

But I can only get 30 Hz with this cable. 

HP is extremely unhelpful with this. I spent 2 hours on the chat and the information I got is that there are a handful of docking stations that will support 4K at 60 Hz, and the there is no other way to get 60 Hz - i.e. no USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 adapter cables will let me get 60 Hz. This latter part seems to be conflicting with the examples on this thread. But if there are some adapters that will support 60 Hz, clearly not all will, as mine is a counter example. So what is required to get 60 Hz with a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 adapter cable? My monitor can definitely do 60 Hz via its DVI port - I've had that with a different laptop with a DVI to Mini DP cable. It's supposed to also support 60 Hz with HDMI 2.0, but I have not had a chance to confirm that.
