Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

Envy notebook 17-u18ca
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I tried to connect two external monitors to my laptop, i connected one with the HDMI port and it worked perfectly.  Since there is only one HDMI port on my laptop, I brought a USB-C adaptor, (USB-C to HDMI), and connected the laptop with the second monitor, but it didn’t have any response. The monitor kept showing as no signal. (My monitor only has HDMI and VGA port)

Does my laptop not support two external monitors, or I should try another way to connect the second monitor?

Hello @KimKJ,

Glad to be of assistance.

I took a look at your computer's Specifications and I regret to inform you that this laptop's USB-C port is a standard USB 3.0 port incapable of DisplayPort Alternate Mode. This is further justified by the fact that there is no mention of USB-C display output in this computer's Maintenance and Service Guide.

Unfortunately, USB-C is simply a connector type and doesn't say anything about the actual functionality. This is where a lot of people get confused.

I urge you to return the USB-C to HDMI adapter. What I can suggest for a dual monitor setup is purchasing a USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter such as this. However, one thing I should say is that these may be a bit unstable and I cannot guarantee flawless functionality although the reviews seem to be generally positive.

Hope this answers your question,

Eddy

Hello @KimKJ,

Unfortunately, I can't find anything related to "Envy Notebook 17-U18ca," therefore a specific model/product number would be appreciated. (Please do not post serial numbers on the HP Support Forum)

Information on how to find a laptop's model/product number is detailed in this HP document.

Furthermore, could you please tell us what USB-C to HDMI adapter you're using?

Best regards,

Eddy

Hey @EddyK, I have the same issue but can't seem to get my 2nd monitor to extend.  My 1st monitor works great.  It's connected via an HDMI directly.  My 2nd monitor is connected via a USB to HDMI adaper.  I have my display settings set to extend desktop to this display for both monitors.  The 1st monitor works fine but my 2nd (USB to HDMI adapter) doesn't extend.  I see the taskbar of my laptop screen and the screen color but can't move the mouse over or move opened windows to it etc..  Any ideas why I can't get this to work?  Thx
