HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp3000 RCTO Base Model

I need to connect two external monitors.  There is only one HDMI port which I am using successfully.  I have tried to connect the second monitor several ways with no success.  I have a port extender plugged into the USB C which has an HDMI port, but that did not connect the monitor.  I have a USB A to HDMI cable which I tried in both USB A ports on the laptop, no success.  I connected a powered external USB A port extender and used the USB A to HDMI cable with no luck.  How do I get the second monitor connected?

Hi @JoeR36,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To connect two external monitors to your HP 17 laptop, especially given the limitations you’ve mentioned, follow these steps.

Verify Port Compatibility and Settings:

  • USB-C to HDMI Adapter: Ensure that the USB-C to HDMI adapter is compatible with your laptop and supports video output. Some USB-C ports do not support video output. Verify this in your laptop’s documentation or settings.
  • USB-A to HDMI Adapter: These adapters often require specific drivers to function properly. Make sure you’ve installed any required drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

Update Drivers:

  • Graphics Drivers: Update your graphics drivers from the HP website or through Device Manager.
  • USB Drivers: Ensure that your USB drivers are up-to-date.

Check Display Settings:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Display Settings.
  • Scroll down to Multiple displays and click Detect to see if the second monitor is recognized.

Try Different Adapters or Cables:

  • If possible, try using different adapters or cables to ensure there isn’t an issue with the equipment itself.

Use a Docking Station:

  • Consider using a USB-C docking station or a USB 3.0 docking station that supports multiple monitors. Docking stations can provide additional video outputs and often include their own drivers.

Check BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Sometimes, video output settings can be adjusted in the BIOS/UEFI. Check if there are any settings related to video output or USB configurations.

Test Monitors and Connections:

  • Test each monitor and connection on another device to ensure they are working correctly.

Example Setup with a Docking Station:

  1. USB-C Docking Station: Connect the docking station to the USB-C port. Plug both monitors into the docking station using HDMI or DisplayPort cables.
  2. USB 3.0 Docking Station: If you use a USB 3.0 docking station, connect the station to the laptop’s USB-A port and connect the monitors to the docking station.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
