My Opinion
- It is a bad situation.
- The hinge assembly is not going to get better on its own -- it might get worse.
- Stop closing the unit - leave it open.
AND
- Make sure you have backups of your personal data on other then the local computer.
- Do that -- have backups -- don't be someone who says, "Yeah, but it should not have happened."
AND
- Be prepared - think about what you will do if you must deal with the issue without help from HP.
- Self - Repair is generally an option if you can get the parts AND if you have the necessary skill set.
- Check with local repair houses -- see if you can find a tech willing to rebuild the unit / provide advice.

Hinge assembly problems are a common issue and one that is not limited to one manufacturer.
A quick search on the Internet will find examples of hinge failures from all the major brands.
If your Warranty does not cover hinge assembly issues, consider how else to move forward.
